We got a letter from school, not sure why it was on the school newsletter like but... It informed us that will need to go on to the wigan, gov website to fill in a questionairre to decide what changes are made to the Council Tax Benefit System, there is a booklet that 'explains' what they are planning to do, saying that unless the 2.5 mill they are getting less from the govt. is recouped then some council services will be cut/reduced.
now they have alreadt halved the bin collections and upped the recycling so to me the savings have been made, except they rushed those through so that they are already in place BEFORE the council tax thing will come in an so disregarded.

I went on and filled in the questionairre, it asks questions regarding certain groups of people and if they should get council tax reductions, giving the strongly agree - strongly disagree options.

i.e.
Pensioners will not see a change in the reduction that they may be entitled to after the changes. agree-disagree.

A reduction due to disability will remain. agree-disagree

There will be no Full Council Tax Benefit, everyone will have to pay 20% at least (£240 ish here).

Now if the whole borough are getting to decide on the changes, then will they take into consideration the needs of the people in the questions ?

I don't get any disability allowances, but I realise that those that do will be dependent on them so agree that they will stay the same, as with Pensioners.

The other group though, i.e. low earners, may go from paying £0 to +£240....... So thats what they meant when they "removed x amount from taxation" someone who earned next to feck all and had a tax bill in accordance with that, as in £150, is now saving that......... but will have to find £90 to add to it for council tax.
The figures btw said that 35,000 receive ct benefit in this area with 65% getting full ct benefit.

To me it just seems that the majority, that don't get any benefits, now have the chance to cut other peoples, and tbh I think that a great many will jump at the chance to do so, with little or no regard as to how much the family may depend on them.

Or indeed the fact that they may one day need to rely on them.

Welcome to Thatchers Britain II

so its still thatchers fault?
a bird did a poo on my car, its thatchers fault for cutting the bird control money back in 1982.

you have litle or no faith in your fellow man This is exactly what democracy is all about, letting the majority decide. This is a great idea by wigan council, the people will decide instead of politicians.
You could say it show a real lack of political backbone of politicians especially a labour controLled council unable to make the hard decisions.

Some Men Just Want To Watch The World Burn.

some men believe people should have the right to decide for themselves including who should carry the responsibility for council tax, and people should be trusted instead of being told by politicians.

just saying.

So a load of people that don't need help get the chance to cut the help that others get, with little or no comprehension of what kind of situation that they must be in to be getting the help in the first place.

Given the selfishness of society nowadays it's pretty much a given that there will be "I don't get it so why should you" attitude.

As for Wigan Council, yes labour controlled, but told to cut this budget by GOVT. as in the amount they receive from them has been reduced.
This is a local authority that has always had you drive on it's major roads at night without lighting, and nothing to do with the environment either, as I said they have altered the bin collections cannyly in advance.
They created 'Townships' where neighbouring places became 1, where I live got merged with the more common pit town next door, this was done quite simply because for the amount of houses that they have allowed to be built here would mean that we should have a library etc. by merging with the place next door they don't have to provide all these extra services, I think 6 or 8 townships were created.
Unless you live in the area that was classed as Wigan originally then the local councill have sought to stiff you in any way possible over the years..... Highest Poll Tax in the country when it was in existence, to pay for lots of things in a pllace that a great many of us have no alllegiances to in any way shape or form, and the only reason we have to deal with them is due to boundary changes and devolution of local councils.

Hahahaha our glorious conservative nation with yet another masterstroke. I have no idea what it is like but if it popcorns you northern peasants then I'm all for it.

Yeah mate you'll think it hillarious when you are 35 and still stuck at home cos you cant afford to move out.

or moved out and having to give them £1500 a year, you quite possibly have absolutely no idea how much the council tax bill is for your house ?

I realise I'm absolutely ****ed man. Thing Im concentrating on is getting out of my ****ty job and being able to earn enough money to pay rent on a decent ish flat asap. No chance can I afford to get into the housing market for the forseeable future. Everythings astronimcal atm, not just housing and tax etc.

That's the thing though, everything has gone up, apart from wages, the benefits have always been means tested and they have this 'minimum required to live' calculation, so with everything going up and wages not, they are now saying that they expect you to live on less than their calculation. Or at least giving those that as i have said don't get benefit..... because they earn an amount that means they don't need it, the option of reducing it for those that do need it. I don't think they have any comprehension of earning low wages and the way that you have to watch everything you spend.... there is no excess amount to find extra cost from.
