Patrick Leigh Fermor , A time of gifts and between the woods and the water, for me are the best travel books ever written .
Papillon - if you've seen the film and enjoyed it, buy the book...a million times better.
His third volume was reviewed in the paper today - don't know if you've read it - The Broken Road. Sounded like it had been put together from a ton of material after he died.Patrick Leigh Fermor , A time of gifts and between the woods and the water, for me are the best travel books ever written .

Carpe Jugelum or The Fifth Elephant - Terry Pratchett, probably the best of the incredible discworld series, I am sure this will create an argument!
Also Foul by Andrew Jennings about FIFA if it doesn't make you weep for the Beautiful Game then you are not a football fan.
Not from me, the guy is an absolute genius. He writes stuff you can read aka pass the time.
Not come out with books that they think they should've read like some on here...I mean The Esk do you actually read AND like all that stuff, if so more power to you, but I'll stay in the lower leagues
I'm not sure I can pick a favorite. I love to read, but reading isn't like music for me in that I like to make lists.
Here are some off the top of my head though:
"The Spy Who Came In From The Cold" - John Le Carre
"High Fidelity" - Nick Hornby
"Our Man In Havana" Graham Greene
"The Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency" - Douglas Adams
"The Code Of The Woosters" -PG Wodehouse (really just picking one out of a million)
"Les Miserables" - Victor Hugo
"Mission To Paris - Alan Furst
So many more...
