Does Messi really not deserve it? Top scorer in Europe. Again. Won the league title in a season that undeniably showed up that Barcelona are critically dependent on him to maintain their high standards (look how they struggled in games he was rested). Not his fault his team mates bottled it in the CL.

It’s an award that recognises individual brilliance. There’s been little wrong with his personal performances across the season. I think it would devalue the award to ignore him just so a CL winner gets it.

If it does go to VVD, it’ll go to arguably the second best footballer over the course of the season though. Unpopular opinion but sadly a common one.
