We have threads for other forms of media so I thought I'd start one about Audiobooks and Podcasts and see how it goes. I have a lot of tasks that don't require listening so I generally listen to these or music. My audiobooks are almost always autobiographies, read by the author if possible. My podcasts are generally light as I prefer TV shows for the true crime malarky.
I think the name and a brief description of the thing followed by opinion seems like a decent format.
Audiobooks:
Ramble Book - Adam Buxton
Stories in chronological order from Adam of "Adam and Joe" fame. Growing up in a boarding school that his dad couldn't really afford is a big part. It's well written and well read.
Surprisingly Down to Earth, and Very Funny - Limmy
Lived a pretty wild life before becoming famous for writing comedy sketches. Didn't know much about him before but he's very open and honest.
Truth, Half Truths, and Little White Lies - Nick Frost
A man who got very lucky befriending Simon Pegg as he'd probably be dead by now otherwise. Interesting but found myself liking him less after listening to it.
A Life in Parts - Bryan Cranston
The dad from Malcolm In The Middle and Walter White from Breaking bad came across well as a person and I enjoyed it.
Bossypants - Tina Fey
Former Saturday Night Live head writer and actress. Written as a kind of self help book and short at 5h32, left me disappointed it wasn't a full autobiography as she's funny and interesting.
Still Foolin' 'Em - Billy Crystal
Actor and comedian turns 65 and puts together stories and life advise for his peers. Still fairly enjoyable and funny.
The Storyteller - Dave Grohl
Drummer of Nirvana and creator/lead singer of the Foo Fighters tells his life story. Such a phenomenal gift and he didn't let it go to waste. Took huge risks to make it as a drummer and got to live an amazing life because of it.
Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama - Bob Odenkirk
Gained huge fame in Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad but started out as a comedy writer. Didn't enjoy this one. Read it like either he's not good at reading out loud or the book was ghost written and he was seeing it for the first time.
I'm Glad My Mom Died - Jennette McCurdy
She played the sidekick/best friend on a Nickelodeon show called iCarly. Hadn't heard of her, or it, but so many people said this book was a must. They were not wrong. Hard listen at times but worth it.
(R)evolution - Gary Numan
Going into this knowing he's on the autism spectrum will make the book and his behaviour a lot more understandable. Really needed a good advisor in his early days.
All About Me! - Mel Brooks
Genius comedy writer tells you about his life. Most all of it. It's a bit of a slog at around 15 hours but I've always enjoyed his stories. Like a few others I've listened to, they feel they need to justify themselves and their achievements.
Podcasts:
The Adam Buxton Podcast - Dr Buckles interviews people from all types of field one on one. Manages an A-lister once in a while with Tom Hanks and Werner Herzog having episodes.
Richard Herring's RHLSTP - Richard interviews celebs in front of a crowd and it generally a bit more lewd than Buxton but can be serious when needed.
How Did This Get Made - Comedians/Actors Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas, and June Diane Raphael watch poorly rated movies and pick them apart, sometimes with crowd and/or guests presenters. Not always great, but guests and movie choices can't always be gold.
My Mate's a Footballer - Comedian Joe Wilkinson talks to Patrick Bamford of Leeds about being a footballer. Only about half an hour each week so easy to listen to. Been some interesting stuff, especially the most recent episode when he talks about angry fans going to his house when his wife and kids are there and he isn't.
Ed Gamble and Matthew Crosby podcast of the radio show they do on Radio X - Brain cleanser. When I just want to listen to people being silly for the sake of it.
