In kids football and up to junior hitting a pen like Rooney's , hard , into the corner you are going to score , if left footed go the other side . The moment you open up your body and try to side foot it the other side things start going wrong .
Moving up to top class footie when goalies are good and have studied the takers then I would recommended one type and its German style , hard and high to either side , goalies do not dive into top corners , one danger , hitting it over the bar.

To back up the OP, arguably the best two penalty takers of the modern game, Shearer and LeTissier both wacked it high into the net with great accuracy.

Henrik Larsson (Celtic, Man Utd etc) used to hit it hard and accurately in the gap between the post and stanchion every time. It was pretty well inevitable he'd score.

Aim for the post... put a bit of curl on... 3/4 way up. Never missed.

I aim dead centre.

Sometimes this makes the ball go top right, sometimes bottom left, sometimes top left, sometimes bottom right, or anything in between, but most often it goes soaring off into low orbit.

To back up the OP, arguably the best two penalty takers of the modern game, Shearer and LeTissier both wacked it high into the net with great accuracy.

Shearer was not as good as I remember, although he scored the most pens of anyone: (these are just PL stats)
