The ‘Moytinez’ Conundrum, by Daniel Carter

Unless you are an Everton fan living under a rock at the moment, you must be fully aware that the ‘Martinez Out’ movement has been gathering pace as the team lurches from one week to the next, with seemingly no improvement and even less desire shown than in the previous week. A natural consequence of this is speculation regarding who should replace Martinez should the board decide to act, and subsequently David Moyes is a name that keeps on appearing.

Now before I delve further into this suggestion I must make it clear that I don’t support a return for Moyes. He was a great manager for us, but the club has moved on and it would be remiss of us to return to Moyes just because we know what we are getting. It’s like having your favourite blanket as a child removed from you; the only reason you want it back is because you feel safe with it.

However, that doesn’t detract from the fact that the club should be looking to hire someone of a similar type to Moyes. What Moyes brought was a hard-working, committed and consistent team, something that is clearly lacking in this current crop of players. Whilst Martinez clearly has a team of better individuals, what he has been unable to extract from them is their best performances week in, week out.

We used to be well-drilled, players used to know their positions, we used to be hard to beat. What we have now is lots of attacking flair, but a brittle team that looks distinctly lost under what is clearly a managers failing tactics that he will just never change or adapt; he’s just not that type of manager. Whilst he remains, it is clear that the inconsistency will also remain.

Under Moyes we got 110% every game from every player, he demanded nothing less. Martinez, however, seems to only be able to get the best out of players on the big occasions and even then it must now be questioned as to whether it’s really him who gets the players up for these games or if the players are just doing it for themselves. But for all of Moyes’ qualities, the football under him was often dull, with the illusion that results were often being grounded out rather than convincingly won.

So where does that leave us on the managerial front? Well for starters there is absolutely no guarantee that Martinez will go and an FA Cup win will more than likely provide a stay of execution. But what do we need? Well the answer probably lies in needing a manager who can combine both the desire, commitment and consistency of a Moyes’ team, with the attacking qualities under Martinez; a combination that pronounced ‘the school of science was back’ in Martinez’s first season. What we need now is a manager with ‘Moyteniz’ qualities, but who that will be? Well only time will tell.

We have had the defensive first type and got nowhere. we then went for attack first type, and actually have been even worse than going nowhere.

Id like to see a man manager / tactician type now. someone who just doesn't have philosophy but can manage the team against different opponments. so playing west ham and playing arsenal arent going to warrant the same team/tactics/subs and wonder why it isnt working.

One manager who does that is Koeman, not the most exciting choice but even if he took us back to top 7, it's better than what we are doing now.

@Ashtonian

If we hired Koeman i'd be furious. Hes been a failure everywhere other than feyenoord and although he had to sell players at southampton hes spent a fair whack as well hasnt he?

As for finishing 7th under him id rather set our sights higher even if it means a couple of seasons in mid table rebuilding.

I agree with most of that. The problem is though, I am becoming very sceptical as to whether the "rebuilding" we are doing is going in the right direction. The foundations we are laying look very faulty.

that i dont get. you back martinez so much yet then return with happy to sit mid table rebuilding. Martinez is getting sacked for exactly the same thing here, rebuilding and ultimatly failing at making us competitive, the club cannot afford to take another couple of years off for a manager, football doesn't work like that if you have ambition.

Koeman, i am basing my view on what he has done at southampton. I have been largely impressed, considering he has surely spent much less than he has sold his players for. Plus the fact that he has managed to make that team top 7 still despite it being broken up for 2 years is actually some achievement, especially when you factor in their centre halves, full backs, midfield and striker all taken away and he has kept them going.

Would he be a success here? no idea mate. I'd like to think so but i would also like a much bigger name if i had a choice so koeman is back up to a bigger choice in my mind.

Just going off this thread title and OP it screams Tuchel to me or even Cocu.
tuchel was a shout by some last time out, no chance of poaching him from dormund now though.

cocu is intriguing, could well be a good manager to go for, for the bigger picture but i know nothing about him so can't really put anything forward for him bar the youth players he brings through.

Moyes served us well. He made us competitive, often hard to beat and respectable again, but and with no disrespect to him was never going to win us a trophy.
But he had a mental blockage where the "Big Four" were concerned and that cascaded down to the players all too often.

And that mental blockage is still only too apparent... see OT two weeks ago.
Too often under Moyes and now El Bob, we play the occasion and not the 11 in front of us.
This season has seen woeful RS and Manure teams and so far, we're taken just one point.
Granted the home loss to Manure was in part down to the mourning of Howard Kendall, but it has to be said that two woeful teams have taken 8 points out of nine against us.
Arsenal and Chelsea have stuttered and we've taken 4 from 12 against them.

We need a manager who is going to radically change the mindset within not only the players, but the coaching staff and dare I say it, right throughout the club.

To be fair, Moyes' discipline and defensive ability + Roberto's transfer sweet talking and more attacking outlook would produce a good manager.

It's basically the old mermaid conundrum. Bobby has those sexy come hither eyes and sweet talking lips, but when you get down to it, there's nowhere to jam your rod of euphoria. Just disappointment and anti climax. Whereas Moyes is the dour and ugly fish head, but he offers a solid foundation with those two fine human legs planted firmly on the ground.

Or something.
