Hi lads, I've managed to get myself through 2 stages of a Graduate Scheme for Rider Levett Bucknall (Property Consultancy firm) and I now have a telephone interview on the 2nd.
I've never had one of these before so don't know what to expect. Anyone ever had a telephone interview before (hopefully for a graduate scheme) and have any pointers?

Thanks.

Are you a fast typer? google the question as soon as he says it lid and it'll give you top answers.

Reasonably. I'm unsure if a brief pause would lead them to assume I was doing that though. I planned on writing prepared answers and just having them with me.

Just the same as a face to face interview mate, they ask questions you answer them.
Sometimes you'll get a Skype interview so they can see you

The only one I had, or have conducted for that matter, were apptitude tests. Like they ask you what appear to be dozens of questions about all sorts of stuff, when in fact they are only asking you about 6-7 questions. Designed to get an accurate picture of your character and stuff. Just be honest, and you will be fine.

Unless you are a complete bulb in real life. Then lie a lot.

Treat it like a face to face interview, I'd even suggest dressing smartly so that you feel like it's an important meeting.
Personally I don't use them because you can't pick up the visual signals but I know that a lot of companies do these days so I guess if you are looking for work then you will have to get used to them.
Good luck fella, let us know how it goes.

Talk clearly and precisely. Don't ramble. Get your point across pleasantly.

Listen carefully to the questions and answer the question.

Hello mate, and well done.

I've conducted a load of telephone interviews, generally i just want to know if they are capable of doing the job, i've already identified you ( for example ) as having the basic skills required, i just want to identify if you're worthy of an interview now, its not an official interview per se, more a case of catching out those who arent capable or dont fit the spec.

i would hope ypu've

1. Know the type of role
2. Have some skills, or have learnt the scope of the role at least
3. Know the company, structure etc ( who is the CEO? who is the head of your department etc ) Linkedin.com can help you here
4. Look at any changes in the company recently, that you can use to pose questions ( its never good, or at least its better to have some questions than to say ' no i don't have any ! ) at the end.

I would either ...

:P ...do it in the nude so you feel more relaxed

or

:D ...get someone else who's really good at interviews to take it for you

Hi mate, listen there's some chancers above so disregard their advice.

I know that you reached out for me personally when you wrote this and you were right to - I've interviewed over the telephone for ten years now, recruiting for such glamourous FTSE top companies such as Schneide and Schneider, Delzmarsux Corp and The Shivering Apple.

Time is a precious commodity so I'm not going to waste any of it and hopefully this will be a lesson as you have to be dynamic my friend, you got that: DYNAMIC. So here's a top three list.

1 - Set the scene. You want to seduce your interviewers year as a delegate so its very important you set the scene for the interview correctly. You are going to need some background music for that. Now must would opt for generic parlour music but that's so 2008. I'd go for something purposeful like Barry White or Groove Armada to show your energy. Experiment with it by phoning 999 and asking them for their feedback on both music choice and correct volume.

2 - Let them know you're a man in demand. OK this guy who is doing the phone interview isn't just interviewing you mate. No siree. He's got a list of willing arse kissers that day for the position you gotta make yours. So turn the tables a bit and state early on that you are awaiting two other calls about executive positions that day. After about five minutes of your interview apologise and place the interviewer on hold. Lets not go overboard and just do it for a minute. OK back to it as though nothing has happened - he's got the message. Then right as you think they're closing up announce a second call coming through and place them on hold but this time for no less than fifteen minutes. When you take it off call and go into the remaining part of the interview tell them that was another telephone interview and you've been offered the job so they're going to have to up their game if they want you truly to be their man.

3 - Don't be submissive and I-N-T-E-R-A-C-T. A good interview is a two way process and any goo interview knows this. Do you think they want a wet submissive fish for their company? Hell NO! So for most of the questions show that you can engage people even over the phone and repeat the question back to the interviewer word by word. Tell them that you would be interested to know how they would answer the question too as you're profiling them to see if they're the right company for you to work for. Give it a shot and marvel at the results.

Hope these proved of use to you pal. Normally I'd charge thousands but this one is on the house as its the season of goodwill.

Go get em tiger.
