AKA Teaching English as a Foreign Language

Has anyone done one of these courses before? Looking to book an online one so I can do it before university so that once I've finished my teacher training, I can go abroad for a couple of years using the TEFL qualification before settling into a classroom job in the UK.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I found this deal on a course and trying to work if it's legit or not. And if it is whether or not it will be worth doing, or paying the extra for one that I'm more sure about:

online ones aren't the best because you don't get the actual practice of teaching in front of people.

make sure you do a CELTA TEFL course, the other ones are a bit **** in comparison

I work as a teaching assistant and have had to take classes many times so im not too worried about that bit like i have the experience

will have a look at CELTA though thanks

You'd have to be pretty good at the foriegn language too, wouldn't you?

Depends where you do it. Also it is not vital to speak their language, just little bits, like basics. Because the idea is that they learn from listening to you.

I know a girl who went to do it in Spain, couldn't speak the language and had no previous teaching experience. Two years on, best thing she's ever done and she's fluent in Spanish.

Doesn't help you an awful lot, just a positive example.

The advice will definitely differ depending on where you intend to go.

Daves esl cafe is by far your best bet for resources and advice

No, that's a great example. Have heard loads of stories like that and they just make me want to do it more.

Thanks mate. I will go anywhere there are openings really although I'd like to go somewhere like Croatia, Latvia, Thailand or Korea really.

Bear in mind some country's, like Japan, insist on you having a degree prior to working there.

Didn't know that. But by the time I go I will have one.

Yeah thailand or korea definitely require degrees, but as you'll have one you'll be fine. They actually value experience over a formal tefl or tesol qualification too, but as far as i know you can use a bit of spin to say you have some relevant experience.

I'm loving your list of places though, each of those countires is vastly different from the others isn't it?

You not thought about china. Pretty easy to get tefl work there for someone with an honours degree

You not thought about china at all? Easisest

Just a point about China (and perhaps the rest of Asia), they only take on English people, not Americans. They want people to learn with an English not American accent.

Was thinking about China, those were just my top ones as they are countries which have always fascinated me. Would go anywhere as I said! I think I'd have the experience though because I have been working in classrooms for about 2 years and for my degree I have to do loads of placements in schools anyway.

Good job I've got a good old British accent then haha

Latvia's fine for a stag do and a bit of fanny. Not sure i'd want to live there though.
