.....if we are talking about the sound of bands like Kraftwerk, then it’s not for me.

the instrument, the culture, the endless possibilities...it's like if this was the guitar thread we wouldn't just be talking about the beatles or hendrix.

...tho' synths are probably still a bit leftfield. the market is booming, tho', maybe the renaissance will hit the mainstream soon.

Depends how they're used. Absolutely ruined music in the 80s for me. Every band had them and did them to death. It's one thing to have a skilled user subtly accompany other instruments on a quality synth (Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd etc) but its quite another when they're a main instrument. To a critical listener they lack the depth and texture of an acoustic instrument.

I grew up enjoying Vangelis and Jean Michelle Jarre and loved it. Then my hifi started getting better and Mike Oldfield came along using instruments. Suddenly the synth only stuff sounded thin and brittle.

The worst crime is when they're used to replace a drum with their monotonous, inhuman precision (80s again).

I went to a 'night at the London opera' in Swindon once. I expected a couple of top singers (check) accompanied by a cello, violin and perhaps a piano. When the curtains opened and the only instrument was a synth, I nearly walked out. Opera swindon style ffs!

I`m a big a fan of Pink Floyd, as I am of " synth " bands like Joy Division / New Order / Depeche Mode etc, so I have to respectfully disagree.

When a synth is blended properly with guitars they compliment each other.

For instance, the synth sound of New Order, blended with Peter Hook`s bass playing for instance is stunning.

Even so called " Indie Rock " bands like Placebo use the sound of the synth, blended with guitars to maximum effect.

Sorry you`re wrong x

i love them, possibly even more than Everton.

Synths are a way of life with a dedicated culture which is right now experiencing a golden age. Guitars can get to fek.

Here's a charming doc on Youtube's premier synthman, followed by his final synthvid from 2013 (which is a work of art):

do you synth?

Been casually trying to learn a little with VST's and the like due to monetary reasons lol

Been listening to loads of Aphex Twin too who manages to crank out so many different sounds, it's crazy.

I'd quite like a Korg Ms-20.

No I'm not, you colossal dunderhead! :pI said they can be used well with other instruments (but not as a sole instrument.... At least not for an entire damn album!) - which you seem to have agreed with before saying I'm wrong! lollol
