Swimming controversy

The midnight exercising thing was in the real wild west days of the early-mid 90s, the reason the teams brought it in house was to prevent those kinds of scenarios and ensure it took place at least under some kind of medical supervision. Unfortunately, how good that supervision was depended on who your doctor was... Fuentes at Kelme was routinely dosing riders with all sorts.

Oh for sure, but it was seldom one of those things people did on the spur of the moment. It was very heavily calculated and planned.

Yeah sorry I got distracted there, the point I was trying to make was that, athletes being athletes, an ethos of "more is better" held out which is why the teams eventually stepped in and then it became planned and calculated.

And there was Frank...

The controversy aside, quite possibly the finest sportsman in the country Adam Peaty also getting very few plaudits

Its a lonely sport to train for, basically you give up your childhood
True. My youngest is a v good swimmer, swims a class above with 9 and 10 yos (she's 8), but I doubt she'll keep it up, most don't. Just a massive level of commitment once you hit teen years and 5 am starts (for parents as well).
