Everton Under-21s boss Alan Stubbs insists his team must get back to basics after a heavy 5-1 defeat at home to West Ham.

The young Blues were second best in the first half, with the Hammers hitting three goals inside the opening 15 minutes.

"We were convincingly beaten," admitted Stubbs. "They scored three really quick goals that completely took the stuffing out of the team, but overall we were second best to everything on the pitch today - second balls, individual challenges, giving the ball away unneccessarily.

"When you concede, obviously something has gone wrong, but we contributed to every single one of their goals.

"It was poor from start to finish and a really bad day. We all have to hold our hands up and take it on the chin. The next thing now is what reaction they give."

And the former Everton full-back believes the next fixture provides the perfect opportunity for a response.

The Blues head to Arsenal on Monday 3 September in search of their first Barclays Under-21 Premier League points.

"Sometimes it's a great thing to face a big team after a defeat," said Stubbs. "The players know they have to respond and raise their game. They know that whatever they have done wrong, they will have to put right.

"But there's no recipe for hard work. We need to get back to basics and working hard because with the ball, we're very good. The worry is when we haven't got the ball so that's something that we'll be looking to address in the build-up to the Arsenal game."

The squad that started that game;

EVERTON U21’S 1 WEST HAM U21’S 5

Everton U21’s: Taudul, Browning, Bidwell, Lundstram, Duffy, Hammar, Garbutt, Barkley, Vellios, Hope (Forrester), Green(Jones) Subs: Springthorpe, Kelly, Pennington,

West Ham U21’s: Spiegel, Driver, Fanimo (Wearen 75), Moncur (Powell 81), Chambers, Spence, Turgott, Lletget, McCallum, Vose (Badirou 78), Hall Subs: Larkins, , Hunt,

Is he good enough? - Should we be trusting Alan Stubbs?;

Alan Stubbs says he is working to help Ross Barkley improve the defensive side of his game as he continues to rebuild his fitness.

The midfielder made an impact for David Moyes' first-team in the fledgling stages of the current campaign but then missed three months due a knee problem.

Moyes admitted during a press interview in March he would be looking to get Barkley back involved before the season's end and earlier this month sent him to the Dallas Cup as part of an Everton Under-20s side in a bid to step up his match fitness.

The 18-year-old has also played a handful of reserve games in recent weeks and will feature again when the second string travel to Bolton on Tuesday.

"I think we're all excited about Ross' ability but he needs to keep improving," former centre half Stubbs told evertonfc.com. "Both mentally and in terms of his game management - when to try things, what areas to try them in and so on.

"In the final third, as far as I'm concerned, he can do what he wants because that could be the difference in us winning games and I feel we must allow him to do that. In the middle third the risks are greater and he has to have a responsibility then for the team.

"We're working on those areas of his game, which will definitely help him.

"From an attacking point of view, we've got no problems whatsoever. We're just trying to work a little bit now on when he hasn't got the ball, which will be the difference between him being a top player and an okay player."

Apparently we could play an over-age keeper and three over-age outfield players. Would it benefit the likes of Mucha, Gueye and Anichebe to be playing at that level or would it block talent from coming through?

Stubbs says in the article that he worries about young players having it too easy and not facing enough adversity. It sounds like they've been up against it in the first two games. Maybe they think they should be coasting the league with the talent we have available or maybe we've over-hyped our own players and they're not as good as we think?

He has never seemed like a coach to me.....just one of the lads.

Could be wrong about him.....but not inspired by him at all.
