Marriage is older than the bible, though.

I mean you're right that christian marriage is the basis of western marriage law but it's not the only or first take on the concept.

I mean another answer as to where the concept of marriage between a man and a woman was stipulated would be the laws of ancient egypt.

The most relevant answer, imo, would be the laws of the uk up until 2014, with the counter answer of where the concept of marriage between a man and a man or a woman and a woman was stipulated being the laws of the uk from 2014 onwards.

Essentially there was a law that was set for a number of years and now that has been altered. And you feel there isn't a good enough reason to change something that has worked for a long time.

And that's fair enough. But I think it's also worth pointing that the christian western monogmous hetrosexual marriage law isn't the only form of marriage law to ever exist. Same sex marriages were legal in pre christian societie in italy and mesopotania.

It's a bit like democracy I guess. In that it was one of the ways things went in antiquity but ultimately lost the battle of public opinion so for most of the last 2,00 years in europe monarchy and hetrosexual only marriages were the rule. And then now we're changing a lot of how opnions on how things should go so those rules are no longer so sacred. Obviously just because something happened for 2,000 years doesn't mean it's the right choice now but it also doesn't mean that's it's the wrong choice. If you happen to think that same sex marriage is a bad choice on it's own merits and not just because of tradition then fair enough.

An age gap of that size seems far too much... as somebody said, regardless of straight, gay, whatever. Yes they are entitled to be happy, hopefully it's all for the right reasons. I just know that I, and literally everybody else I know of a similar age, would never, ever consider being with somebody more than double our age. They'll sure have to put up with a lot of negative comments and judgements as to their genuine reasons and feelings.

Imagine they were both 10 years younger...

Speak for yourself lid, I'd happily marry a woman 40-60 if she had loadsa money.

What I don't understand with Christians against gay marriage or gay relationships is what do they want as an alternative?

There are millions of gay men around the world who are living a lie married to a woman, their lives are probably miserable and this would be affecting the wife too. Do these gays go to Heaven whilst the others go to Hell?

The majority of gays (imo) try to conform, they try to make it work with women but it just doesn't, I know I tried. It comes to a point where you have to just accept it.

For a religion that preaches about love, then why is that love only shown to certain people? Surely a relationship that has had to overcome so many social obstacles deserves to be recognised in every bit the same as a heterosexual one? At the end of the day we're all human, we're all only on this planet for a short time and I would rather let people live how they choose, unless they're Liverpool fans.
