A question to those of you that watch the scottish leagues.
When Rangers were demoted to the third division there was much talk about the league's quality supposedly going to depreciate considerably and the competition to almost literally be one-sided.
Being from Australia I find it hard to keep up to date for most legaues on a daily basis.
Hard enough staying awake till 4am to watch Everton boss the league.
So has the quality fell away dramatically or has the league become more competitive?
Cheers in advance, lads!

The standard of football has dropped considerably since the heydays of the 80's and 90's

Scottish Football is similar to League 1 level in England, with Celtic being a lower level Prem team at best

This has more to do with both Old Firm teams poisioning the waters and nicking all the best players for themselves

Celtic are currently 10 points clear and, outside of thrashing Motherwell 5-0, have been mostly winning by the odd goal. They conceed very few goals and are able to just kill games off

The rest of the teams are all capable of beating one another and you usually get games that are exciting, though lacking in footballing quality

The recent derby game between Hibs and Hearts was a good example. Exciting to watch but no where near the quality of play you'd get in the other top leagues in Europe

There has been slight improvement, but only slight. Even in League 1, Rangers still have a side of young players and established vets who could walk into pretty much any SPFL team outside of Celtic

When Rangers come back, they'll be second to Celtic but above everyone else

Caley Thistle, Aberdeen and Dundee United have all made strides and Hibs are slowly improving under new manager Terry Butcher

If all you care about is skill, you'll hate it. If you believe in spirit, grit and an understated honesty of football, there'll be plenty for you to enjoy

Last year, both semi finals in the cup ended 4-3. Hibs came from 3-0 down to win 4-3 in extra time with Leigh Griffiths scoring an absolute rocket. Celtic and Dundee United were neck and neck all the way through their semi final and it also went to extra time

I defy any other cup competition to have two such awesome back to back semi finals last season

Honest question, do you think everybody would be better off if the Old Firm shipped off to the English football pyramid a la Swansea and Cardiff City?

Not that they would do it, for both political reasons and the fact that it probably wouldn't benefit those two clubs much in the end, but I feel like having those two clubs out and more parity in Scottish footie would help a lot of the other clubs succeed.

I've always had a soft spot for Scottish football. Firstly from about Fifa 05 with my first team being Rangers.
Nowadays I've fallen in love with Inverness thanks mainly to them being my go to team on Football Manager for a challenge.
Theres certainly a lot of games I'm going to try and watch when I come to england in the future.

Not really

The problems would remain, that being that the Old Firm would take all the best talent from the other Scottish teams

At least this way, the other sides get a slice of the Old Firm TV pie

Wouldnt the TV money decrease a large amount due to the absence of Celtic and to a lesser extent now in Rangers, at least in the short term?

It's brutal, Celtic would struggle to stay in the Premiership, the other teams would be mid-table League 1 team's at best.

At best.

I don't think so. Aberdeen, and Dundee Utd showed in the 80s that by having good youth policies and brilliant managers, they can not only match, but surpass the old firm. Both those clubs were among the best in Europe at that time. Obviously finances have changed the Scottish game as much as it has the English game, but there has always been a huge financial gulf between Celtic/Rangers and the rest.

I've never believed that competition is best served by removing the strongest, it is best achieved by others striving to step up a level. If one team can put together a squad which is clearly better than the rest of the league then it becomes a 3 way challenge and then anything can happen.
