had a staffy Bullet , loved him had him from a few weeks old kennel club cert the lot, was concerned when the kids were born, they really are powerful(the dogs not the kids) , never had a minutes problem from him, if the babies cried he wouldnt leave you alone till you checked them, wouldnt have any other breed of dog over them and as a kid we had a few in the house, labs, grayhounds mongrels allsorts , only the mongrels were anywere near as good, i was heartbroken when he died and swore i wouldnt ever keep a dog after him, but if you want to take a bit of advise mate stay clear, it not worth the risk if it goes wrong, with any dog not just a staffy, they are a magnet for knobs with pitbulls and the like, and they get robbed by tits that should never be in charge of a dog, they cost a fortune in vets fees and time and effort if you want to be a good owner, and with a young one on your hands your efford will be better spent on that

What breeds would you stay away from?

Avoiding anything with teeth bigger than me is a rule I'd follow.

Might not work for everyone though

Get a Labrador. Got one last year and she is brilliant, really playful and ver friendly. When walking her other dogs growl and I've never heard her once bark outside, intact ive never seen one labrador show aggression.

Nah, being honest you can pick out a news story for any dog. Like this particularly nasty attack from a Yorkie.

I don't have kids, so I don't give a flying ****. But, I would be seriously embarrassed to be seen with a muscle dog.
That and neck tattoos are the mark of the brainless!
Which dogs would I keep away from (if I had kids)? Ones that could kill a man. & I question the mentality of anyone who would want a dog like this.
There are loads of breeds with a nice temperament, so why would you choose this option?? ?? ??
The irony is, staffs are one of the breeds recommended as family dogs, recommended by people who know what they are talking about.

And only homosexuals have poodles, talk about sweeping generalisations.

We had a Lhasa apso. I don't personally like animals being around kids. So the dog went when my daughter was born.

I like staffs a lot, lovely playful and loyal dogs. Whether you have them around your children is a personal choice and there's no right or wrong answer. Up to you.

I doubt either side are going to change the other's opinion like.

You get to know your own dogs temperament and gauge how enthusiastic it can be. Its other peoples dogs that tend to be the problem. I often see people walking dogs without a lead or a dog can just escape from a garden or door, A dog is the same height usually as a pushchair is what scares me.

few years ago came top of the of the list for bites in the uk, i was shocked when i read it, as i have had to when iwas a kid and they as you say were brill worst we ever owned was a greyhound, might have been just the one we owned ex race dog but it was a ****e house dog, awful with other dogs and snappy around kids, we gave it back to the lad we got it off as thankfully he had found somewere to kennel it, not a nice animal at all

Had staffies before, beautiful temperaments if you bring them up right ie. dog training and socialisation classes just to give you as much chance to get it right.

Just bought an English Bull Terrier - pretty little girl!

Our Moysie is a Staffy x Labrador.......He is very terrortorial....will bark and growl at people , who are outside the car or house , but when he actually meets them he is soft as anything.....

He is a strong dog , and you have to be careful when people come to the house , as his excitement and strentgh , could cause issues in knocking em over....

All in all he is loyal and loves fuss......
