This is going to be a touchy subject. I'm not intending it in a racial way, more in an intrigued way. But I'm just going to come out and say it.

Have you noticed the spate of stabbings over the last half a decade generally involve black people, youths specifically?

This latest one, http://news.sky.com/home/uk-news/article/16138659, doesn't appear simply gang related either, but again... black. And the Oxford Street one etc.

I'm just wondering if there's something cultural which is leading to knife crime which involves young black people, mainly in the south of England.

It's a genuine question, and I'd appreciate if it didn't degrade into racist or offensive baiting, as I'm sure it won't!

It's not racist to state the truth. If the facts are there the facts are there. I think it has something to do with the fact that black people tend to come from poorer backgrounds in more deprived areas. Maybe it's due to them in the past not being given the same oppertunitys as others and things have spiralled from there. Although in todays society there is no reason why a black person can't go and make something of himself (hence Obama) so I don't think it can be used as an exuse. I suppose someone can't help where they are born/ what kind of family they are born into.

It's just odd that rape, burglary, drug usage etc. remain pretty even in terms of what race commit thoses crimes, but stabbings seem massively slanted towards the black community. That's what I find odd.

I blame the Air Jordans mate.

I think a great many knife crimes are carried out by people that have come from places where it is much more commonplace, Albanians for example seem to be keen on it and there have been problems throughout europe with them.

I haven't seen the statistics, but I would say that white people would be in the majority for pretty much all crimes as there is simply more of us. If that's not the case then something's up there.

It's part of gang culture, like Jamaican, American etc etc. It's all copied from there.

We've all noticed that don't worry Tubes.

It is strange. As Nik touched on I think it's spiralled from them living in more deprived areas because their family emigrated, so they have less money and opportunities. The kids have nothing to do so the become involved in 'gang culture' type things.

There are just more kids walking around carrying knives full stop. E.g. fights outside pubs have always occurred, but these days they invariably end up with someone getting stabbed. You wouldn't want to try and separate an argument or fight either, as you could end up getting stabbed yourself.

stabbing someone runs a lot deeper than where you have been brought up though. you have to have a screw loose to put a knife in someone.

Would be useful if you could find some official facts and figures which help back that up though.

I've no problem with what you said but as you said it is a touchy subject so something to back up what you said would really help.

IMHO the blame for this sort of behaviour rests a variety of things, though by far the biggest is the utter uselessness of the youth criminal justice system.

As it is now, kids can - if they are so inclined - commit really serious offences (robbery, indecent assault, ABH and GBH etc) without there being punishment available that is either effective as a deterrent or useful in correcting further behaviour. Kids that get as far as Youth Court (which itself is a joke, and anyone who really wants to be depressed should attend one for a day) will almost always have been through the system several times before and will not be put off by it. They will also probably have had either well-meaning or disinterested adults excuse away what they have done - social and youth workers, parents, solicitors, teachers etc etc all the way through the system - when what they really should be doing is challenging such behaviour and dealing with it.

This tends to create a load of young adults who believe that "the system" is weak and will let them off with almost anything, a notion which is broadly speaking true... right up until they hit 18, when the adult courts **** them with actual prison sentences, and their criminal records (some of which are very lengthy indeed) **** up any hope they have of a decent job or career afterwards.

Unfortunately there's a generation that doesn't think twice about doing it, they don't want a fist fight cos they may not win, and also they WANT people to be wary of them and scared.
