Player Valuation: £500k
So as the season draws to a close with Premier League survival secured I wanted to look at the squad which will lead us into our 120th season of top flight football.

Our current first team squad size is 31 players which is set to drop to 24 players at the end of the season should Asmir Begovic be the only out of contract player to be retained & with Nkounkou + Gbamin set to return from loan making a squad value of £372.3m (according to Transfermarkt).

The 24 players are made up of:
  • GK x 2 (-1)
  • DF x 9 (-1)
  • MF x 6 (-2)
  • FW x 7 (-3)
This indicates the squad is light in midfield & forwards in particular, however we can all agree some of our biggest problems sit in defence.

What is even more interesting is that we have another 9 players (£87.9m) whose contracts are set to expire at the end of next season which would take our squad size down to just 15 players (£284.4m).

With some very difficult FFP restrictions preventing a large splurge on players without sales, it's likely we will try to retain 3 or 4 of these contracts via extensions.

We have long term contracts for new signings Patterson (5 Years) & Mykolenko (4 Years) while the remainder of the squad have 2/3 years left on their deals.

How do we maintain a healthy squad size/depth come the end of next season without being able to spend a significant amount of money in the transfer market? Loans? Frees? Player Sales?

Keen to hear your thoughts on our strategy for the next 3 years!
