Squad Rankings

Saint Domingo

Player Valuation: £90m
As of now, rank all 20 squads in the PL per their on paper quality discounting the effect of their manager (e.g if you think Everton have a bottom half squad but Moyes will take them top half, put them in the bottom etc.). This should hopefully help determine where you consider a ‘par’ performance to be for this group of players and whether managers over or under perform. May also help determine whether the squad has improved relative to other teams in the league or not. This is the whole squad not the first team. This may be updated again when the transfer window shuts. Obviously if a team has someone with a season long injury that will affect the score but small injuries shouldn’t factor. This isn’t about where you think we will finish, more about the relative level of the squad Moyes has available to him vis-à-vis the other managers. It can be simply boiled down to ‘would you swap their squad for ours’ if yes put them above Everton, if no put them below.

City
Arsenal
Liverpool
Chelsea
Newcastle
United
Spurs
Villa
Brighton
Forest
Palace
Everton
Fulham
West Ham
Bournemouth
Wolves
Brentford
Leeds
Burnley
Sunderland

Things might change by the end of the window and could see us swapping with Palace if they get gutted for Guehi and Eze and we can bring in a right side. As it stands though they’ve got a better spine than us and more depth in most positions.

So I think Moyes has currently been given roughly the 12th best squad in the league on paper. Yet no doubt fan and owner expectations are for Europe. Some considerable work to get us above the squad quality of Villa to put us in that mix of we’re looking for some Moyes magic. I think Fulham West Ham Bournemouth and Brentford have all taken backwards steps though and we’ve improved so it’s a better relative picture than last season.

I think we’re good value for top half as a minimum expectation for this season, hopefully aiming for any European competition and a cup.

I know that wasn’t exactly what you asked but otherwise I’d just go down the (correct) path of Big Nev and say aim for #1.

Yeah think that's a decent ranking when you don't take managers/coaches into account. Otherwise I'd probably have Bournemouth higher, but that's about it.

It's very much a comfortable mid-table quality squad.

I’d agree but is it a realistic expectation to have if we’ve given Moyes a bottom half squad? We’re asking him to out perform probably Emery Hurzeler Nuno Glasner with worse players. There’d be a few Everton fans who would have all of those names over Moyes as well.

I mean clearly Liverpool are far stronger than Arsenal and City

ARSENAL

I wouldn’t swap our squad with anyone outside of the elite European teams right now because very few have top players like Pickford, Branthwaite, Tarkowski (in Europe’s first XI last season), Ndiaye and now Grealish.

We need depth though. Get some more in before end of the month and we can challenge for Europe, especially if we get new starting RB and RW.

I also wouldn’t swap our stadium or away fans for any in the whole league. If the owners match the quality of the fans in the rest of the transfer window we have a great season.

ARSENAL

As things currently stand Liverpool have one striker. If they bring in Isak that of course could change.

Liverpool’s first 11 is better than Arsenal’s but I think Arsenal have a deeper squad and could sustain more injuries in my opinion. Liverpool only need a few injuries and suddenly Endo Gomez and Connor Bradley are playing.

I think City are being massively overlooked. If Rodri stays fit then they’ve made a lot of good signings that have flown under the radar. If Cherki starts feeding Haaland with Riejnders and Rodri sat behind him that’s a formidable base.

Very scientific. Good job

Strength of the starting XI surely has to be a key consideration though. And is Arsenal’s squad deep? If Saka and Rice get injured they are being replaced by Madueke and Norgaard, enormous downgrades. I don’t think Arsenal are anywhere near Liverpool to be honest with you.

If Arsenal had stayed fit last season and Liverpool had their injuries the league table would probably have been reversed. Every prediction for Liverpool by pundits is always based on them staying completely injury free and everyone else getting injuries. Arsenal are capable of 90 plus points they’ve shown that. They won’t be far away this season if they stay mostly fit.

Fair enough, think Arsenal will do well to finish within 10 points of Liverpool without injuries. I don’t rate them and don’t rate Arteta. Can see them in a battle for 3rd with Chelsea.

It is a very tough league, and the quality runs deep (despite what people say). Currently have us in the group below the top 8 with Forest, Palace, Brighton and possibly West Ham.

Anything better than that needs a fair bit of good luck and other teams bogged down in Europe.
