Spy novelist Tom Clancy dies aged 66

Best-selling US author Tom Clancy, known to millions for his Jack Ryan series of novels, has died aged 66, his publisher has confirmed.

Clancy wrote a string of best-selling spy and military thrillers.

Several of his books featuring CIA analyst Ryan were adapted into successful films, including The Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games.

According to the New York Times, Clancy died in a Baltimore hospital near his Maryland home.

Only just seen this. Can't believe it. One of my favourite authors, I've read the Ryan series over and over. Absolutely gutted. I know Dylan will be too.

Have never read his books to be honest but have watched some of the jack Ryan films which I enjoyed.

Tom Clancy is one of my favourite authors as well. The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger are always a great read. Very talented man.

I am gutted as jock said, when I read this, this morning.

One of my favorite authors, and my two most loved books are written by him (Red Storm Rising, and the utterly superb Without Remorse).

RIP Tom. The image on the back of my copy of Red Storm Rising, of you standing on USS Iowa's deck sums it all up for me.

Also, his view of 'the future' has been incredibly accurate.

The biggest example was when he had a passenger jet crashing into the Capitol Building in Debt of Honor, long before 9/11 happened.
