I actually thought McIlroy would win after his majors wins and the Ryder Cup etc
But no

.....good shout. I think Hamilton won in style, though. He had to overtake his teammate to get a Championship lead and could've played safe in that last (double pointer) in Abu Dhabi but blasted his way into the lead from the start. I'm no big F1 fan but he appears a 'dashing' driver and a throw back to a bygone era.

Lol @ people saying F1 is all about the cars.

F1 drivers lose something daft like a stone in sweat during each race. You have to be incredibly fit, not to mention incredibly skilled to get a car around 1 lap, let alone 70 in a row.
Yeah but they're all pretty equally skilled and fit. What separates them is how good the cars are. Ferrari dominated. Red Bull then dominated. Now Mercedes are top one or two every single race pretty much bar any major incident.

i dont remember my pe lessons at school involve darts, snooker, horse racing or formula 1

....presume that where the short list came from. You do think of darts and snooker as 'games' rather than 'sports'. It's all a bit emotive, none of those appear in the Olympics but for bravery, commitment, fitness, fairness and desire to win Tony McCoy is a very special sportsman.

The engineering aspect has always been there though, and you earn the right to drive at the top teams. Take away the money, research etc and you're basically down to go karts. McIlroy deserved it this year but Hamilton is still a top sportsman.

They're not. Hamilton is the most talented driver on the grid (in my opinion) and has never had the car to match his talent. If you put all of the drivers in the same car Hamilton would come out on top.

I know what you're saying though kid.

What the Ryder cup?
I'd say that draws a rather large audience
I even watched a few rounds of his major wins
Gave up on F1 a long time ago but I guess Lewis draws the crowds
I wonder if anyone watched the sports personality awards?

I meant being on Sky really. Annoys me. Like the last Test Cricket I watched was the 05 Ashes.

Not disputing that he isn't a good sportsman. The condition they have to be in is impressive. But the sport itself is lacking variety. Laps and laps and laps of the same racing lines until tires run out, pack gets reshuffled for a bit until they have to change tires and one team dominate for two three years until they put new engine specifications in the rules.
But each to their own lards.

I'd like to see them negotiate walton vale on a weekday morning in an S-reg Nissan Almera

I'm personality of the year if that's what they're giving out points for chum

My main objection to this man is the way he treated his father, the tax issue is secondary. From your follow on response to The Cowboy it is clear to see that you are a petrol head F1 enthusiast so clearly we will never agre as you probably consider him as one of your sporting heroes, that's fine by me too, he's still a despicable character though.
So you're about to become one of the worlds biggest sportsman and it would still be ok to get your dad to manage your global affairs?

He outgrew his dad, he needed a specialist mangement company to deal with his affairs, I mean David beckham and Tiger woods still have their dad's managing them don't they?

He looks after his dad very nicely indeed, bought him a 250k Porsche a couple of years ago which his dad pranged.

You just hate him for your own reasons mate and that's fine, but don't make him out to have been unfair to his dad when they are as close as ever.

Fair points there kid, fair points.

You could say similar about football, though. Every game is played on more or less the same pitch, how about some variety? What about a triangular pitch? Or one that tilts randomly? At least with F1 you've got variety of different tracks.

I had a thought once, what if all the drivers rotated which cars they used each race? For example, if there were 10 teams and 20 races, you could have 2 races in each car before switching to another.

Would never happen but it'd be interesting.

I think if you made the cars pretty much the same and made it a competition of racers then it vastly improves it. It should be a glamorous version of go karting.

In football though you have a variety of ways of playing, you have a lot of permutations in terms of how you kick the ball, dips in form, very few goals ever being the same and it is genuinely more unpredictable. This isn't me slating formula 1 by the way, just think its become very flat.

The new rules were designed to make it a more even playing field. The testing restrictions, the budget limits, engine regulations, aerodynamics restrictions, no re-fueling during a race, the likes of DRS and KERS etc... Unfortunately it hasn't quite worked out.

I still love it anyway and last season, for me, was the most enjoyable in about 5 years.
