Max Woosnam. The greatest sportsman in the world and no one has ever heard of him. His achievements include.

An Olympic gold and silver medal for tennis at Wimbledon.
Made a 147 in Snooker
A century at Lords captaining the British Davis Cup team.
Captain of Manchester City when they were runners up in the 1920/21 season
Captain of England football team

and he beat Charlie Chaplin at table tennis using a butter knife as a bat.

Surely he is England's greatest ever sportsman. It is a travesty that hardly anyone knows his name.
Superb contribution.

Roger Bannister. He was the first human in history to run a mile in under four minutes. He broke the record with very little training whilst studying to be an NHS doctor.

Dave Hickson. He was never the most talented of centre-forwards, but I'm yet to see another player give as much for the Everton cause as he did.

Rocky Marciano. I didn't get my growth spurt until 17 so at school I was much shorter than the other lads. To see a technically limited guy of 5'9 being able to completely dominate boxing's heavyweight division through hard work and determination alone was really encouraging. He's still the only heavyweight world champion in history to retire undefeated. Floyd Mayweather and our own Joe Calzaghe also retired undefeated, but they obviously weren't heavyweights.

Roy Marshall, bespectacled captain of Hampshire in the sixties. Very aggressive opening batsman. I have never seen a ball hit harder. He tended to intimidate the fast bowlers rather than the other way round.

Born in Barbados, son of Brit plantation manager, he played for the West Indies before family settled back in England.
