Spending League Table

Player Valuation: £40m
I know it's early days, but many clubs seem to be wanting to get their business done early. We moan about our lack of spending, but I'd be far more annoyed if we were one of these clubs:

QPR- Even having Billionaire owners, their only signings are free agents Kieron Dyer and Jay Bothroyd. Star player Abel Taarabt is poised to join PSG for £12m.
Blackburn- With Venkys' money behind them, their record in this transfer window is Jones, Fielding, Khizanishvilli, Rigters, Benjani out, Myles Anderson released by Aberdeen in.
Newcastle- After posting bumper profits, staff at Sports Direct were rewarded with a £45k bonus each. Owner Mike Ashley's club, on the other hand, has recorded a net spend of only £300k- the difference between the unproven Cabaye from Lille and top-scoring captain Kevin Nolan.
Spurs- Rather than consolidating their position as a Champions League contender, they have opted to prune the squad. So far their only signing of note has been Brad Friedel.

1. Liverpool £48m (-£46.5m net)
2. Man United £50.3m (-£45.1m net)

5. Wolves £12m (-£12m net)
6. Norwich £7.3m (-£7.3m net)
7. Sunderland £25.2m (-£5.2m net)
8. Arsenal £11.5m (-£4.5m net)
9. Wigan £4m (-£4m net)
10. Swansea £3.5m (-£3.5m net)
11. Fulham £2.4m (-£2.4m net)
12. Newcastle £4.3m (-£0.3m net)
13. QPR £0 (£0 net)
14. Stoke £0 (£0 net)
15. West Brom £0 (+£2.1m net)

What's the point of that table when it's mid-July?

Most spending happens at the end of the window.

They have ambitition though

As I said, QPR are selling their best player and bringing in journeymen on bosmans. Infact I'd imagine that all of the teams that have yet to spend will pay out less than they bring in, with the exception of Stoke. That 30% of the league. How can it be called ambition?

Actually, there are a few teams in that middle section who I think will try to recover their costs. It will be interesting to see whether Wigan spend any more than the £6m change that they'll have from the sale of N'Zogbia after paying for Al Habsi. I'd imagine that Fulham would like to move one or two players on as well to cover Riise's fee and to give them a transfer budget. More than likely half of the teams in the league will hover around a net spend of zero.

you site QPR as a shining example of "bringing bosmans etc",the reason is simple they'll be relegated this time next year or at best the year after they're simply cutting their cloth accordingly, wigan too are past masters at playing the game hell Whelan would sell the tea lady if he could and good on him,he has a buisness brain.

The table is utterly meaningless its that simple i would assume that as RFUS said most of the tranfer buisness will be done in the last 2 weeks, our's i suspect will be done in the final hours (if indeed we DO any one this summer,i think we will btw) but that table is,as i say meaningless at this time of year.

Lets not forget Harry at spurs has a pathological need to sign half a dozen midfielders and strikers while selling his defence :)7

That'll skew up that table for sure.

So what?

We're trying to move the club on from 7th/8th also rans. All that table suggests is that we'll remain (at best) mid-table also rans.

If that was the case, then that is fine for the time being because it means the excess Everton earn is going toward pulling the club out of the financial mire.
As for Taarabt, Spurs get 75% of the fee. So if he is off to France for £12 million, Spurs get 9 mill, QPR only 3 mill.

for me its not just about our spending this summer! its kenwrights net spending through out his ownership!

Good God.

Being mid-table has gotten us further into the financial mire. More of the same will just mean more digging into the player pool to keep the club financially treading water.

*sigh*

Most clubs who come up simply don't have access to the funds to bring in the players to ensure their survival in the Premier League. Surely Ecclestone and Briatore can spare a few million to atleast give QPR a fighting chance of staying up. The odds of them holding their own without investment are remote. If they go straight back down it's going to cost them £40m or whatever in lost revenue. They simply have to gamble. It could be another 10 or 15 years before they see the top flight again otherwise.

I'm not criticising the tactics of clubs like Wigan. They have very little option. Neither do we. That's my point. We're not lagging behind everyone else by not spending. We're in the majority.

The table is a work in progress. As I've already said, I'm trying to use it as a gauge to compare our level of spending (or lack of) with our peers, to put our situation in context.

Redknapp has repeatedly said that he needs to sell to buy. If we can't offload the likes of Krancjar, Bentley and Hutton, then his hands are tied. Very much like us with Yobo and Yakubu.

It's a trend that we were in at the beginning of. I hope that we stopped borrowing before other clubs and that we will be able to right the situation more quickly than our rivals.
