Hs...dont worry I remember that game.
I really liked the team of de la peña and tamudo. That was when it was really a derby
I imagine that the Spain/Barcelona situation is akin to the Merseyside/England situation.
You won't get as many football fans on Merseyside taking an active interest in England - Everton and Liverpool are our "national sides". Now that may be down to hundreds of reasons, but I imagine that it's the same for Barcelona and Spain - Barcelona is seen as the Catalan national side, rather than Spain.
Having said that, I know micknick disagrees with me here on England/Everton.

Another great book about Spain. Tremlett is the Guardian's Madrid correspondent and, like Jason Webster, became fascinated with the way in which modern Spain handled its own relationship with its bloody, bitter past. He travels the country interviewing Basques, Catalans, Gallegos, Gitanos in Seville; visits el Valle de los Caidos to witness a neo-fascist flashmob; muses on el pacto de olvido and its relevence in the 21st century; the still missing body of Garcia Lorca, and, in one strangely thrilling chapter, he documents his own first person account of the Al Qaida Madrid bombings and how the right wing government tried to pin it on ETA, only to be met with thousands of Madrileños chanting "Tell us the truth" outside its headquarters.
Throughout it all, Tremlett always appears willing to listen to all sides and yet, you feel, thinks that Spain is best as it is. A modern, forward-thinking democracy with much to give to the world. Greater than the sum of its parts.
Highly recommended.
