This comes from a discussion about Barça and Deulofeu HERE, I don´t want to disturb that topic so will clarify here a few things that have been commented about the politic situation in Spain and its relationship with Barça and Catalonia, that aren´t true in my opinion.

1. Catalonia was never been conquered. Catalonia was part of Kingdom of Aragon, and took part of the Reconquista with another three kingdoms: Leon, Castile and Navarre. The four kingdoms were united after the war. There was NEVER an invasion of Catalonia or anything.

2. There have been a lot of civil wars in Spain but none of them have had relationship with the catalan and basque nationalisms, which appeared on late 19th century.

3. The reasons for the independence of Catalonia are almost purely economic and legal. Most catalans feel mistreated by Spain´s central government. This is the real reason. There is no real bloody history here.

4. There´s no hate and no signs of violence, and there´s no ethnic trouble. Independence and Spain supporters are from the same family, live in the same neighbourhood and go to the same pubs. And of course, share the same football clubs. Maybe Espanyol is a bit more ''spanish'' because it´s a smaller club and is not publically represented as ''the Catalonia club'' because the nationalist government doesn´t care what he does.

5. A lot of catalans are angry and say things that come from their own anger, and are not necessarily true.

With regards to number three, I'm fairly certain Franco absolutely terrored the Catalans during the Civil war, including banning Catalan being spoken in public.

In the faint hope this thread attracts native spanish speakers.

I'm trying to teach myself spanish and I can't get "como estas" and "como esta" sorted I'm sure some sources confuse which is formal and informal. Am I right in thinking "esta" is the informal version ie with "Tu" and is it really true spaniards hardly ever use "yo, tu, nosotros etc"?

Here's hoping.

Was going to say this. Catalonia was a stronghold of Republicanism. So yeah, they weren't invaded because they were Catalans, but they were definitely invaded by a hostile enemy.

Pretty much every region/country in Europe has been invaded at some point. We, or rather they, do not really get on that well really.

No, this [Poor language removed] pissed us all, from Pyrenees to Canary Islands.

Catalan is a language spoken in many regions, including Valencia, Balearic Islands, and an Aragon´s fringe. So not only catalans should have suffered that. However, this is not exactly as you say.

He is right to say that the reason there is such a big push for independence is for economical reasons however ask any pro-independence individual and they will first say because i am catalan not spanish and want our own country. This i sympathise with.

The treatment of the region by the government in Madrid has basically just antagonised the whole thing until its become more possible thab before.
