South America Travel Advice

I've driven from Santiago Chile down close to the tip then back up through Argentina...the Argie women are superb! And quite adventurous compared to the good catholic girls in much of the rest of central and south america.

I dont really have any tips since I was roughing it camping/sleeping in dirt half the time...I'm a whitewater kayaker and it is quite amazing for that.

I do remember Bariloche being pretty nice, but probably not super nice this time of year unless you're skiing, and even then its got to be way too early.

Its a trip I'll never forget.

FWIW, I drank the water in both Chile and Argentina and never got sick...hell, i probably drank gallons of it straight out of the rivers. might not want to do that though :)

Got myself two months out of the rat race and am heading to south america: 3 weeks in ecuador, 3 weeks in colombia and 3 weeks in argentina/ patagonia. Anyone been to these countries and would like to give me some hints about stuff to do, where to go, general advice etc?

Right ...where do I Begin

Ecuador

A good place to base yourself is here

http://www.izhcayluma.de/en/frameset.html - loads of activities/trail walking/etc and great cheap accomodation

Places to see - deffo do Quito...but keep your wits about you as there a plenty of rogues about

Other stuff to do - hire a mountain guide and climb the active Volcanos of Cotopaxi and chimboroazo - should take about 1 or 2 days for each Volcano - you cannot go to Ecuador and not do this (remember to pack some warm gear and a good pair of boots)

Argentina

Ah those girls! -

Buenos Aires
You gotta do Buenos Aires ....Puerta Madera has a great vibe about it with lots of waterfront cafes and bars and more of those girls, for central BA check out Plaza Serrano where the young and beautiful hang.

For eats most places are good - they like their steak, but ask for Rabbit (conejo) they do it ace in this spicy sauce.

Mendoza
Deffo worth a visit - full of students, loads of nightlife and great hiking/climbing/rafting/canoeing in the Aconcagua national park
oh and indulge in the local wine - the Malbec is particularly special.

Patagonia
Base yourself in Esquel - hikers/backpackers abound here - loads of trails to explore through some of the most amazing scenery in the world Also check out los Glaciares National Park

Have fun - Jealous here like

Well people, i'm still alive, no traps, bumming or robberies. Been the Caribbean, the jungle, the pacific, quito, bogota. The women in bogota are phenomenal. Going to Buenos Aires next, and have got tickets to boca juniors vs river plate. If I don't make it out alive then consider this my will stating that I donate my worldly possessions to GOT.

No advice from me, but sounds awesome, would love to do what you're doing!

<fumes at own life>

Nice one

This :|

Good stuff. Be sure to spread the good word of GOT around the world. Pasties, porn and part time snidering.

Any chance of bringing a crate of rum back?

He'd better have a G.O.T. flag with him!! :P
