Has anyone visited Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and the surrounding area recently? Mrs. Tree has expressed a desire to go on a holiday involving vineyards and wine-tasting, so I'm looking for recommendations from anyone who has been there in the last couple of years.

Went on a wine tasting tour in California years ago.

Don't remember much about it, other than it started off well ;)

Unless you have a couple of burly bodyguards packing heat i would suggest Italy.

Have you been mate ?

I go regularly and never had a problem nor the hint of it . I wouldn't recommend joberg particularly any more but Cape Town and the region is fantastic . Obviously you take but plenty of countries that's an important consideration as well .

Honestly mate there are so many good vineyards it's tough to recommend . It depends on your taste , big/small , whether you want to eat , what you want to experience . Take your time and have a good look and see that you fancy , if you narrow down time region and what you want then I'll try to help a bit.

The wine route is a fantasy drive and winery's in stellenbosch lovely visits . As a culinary centre franschhoek is brilliant & you a nice walk around of an evening after eating despite what people say about the country . For example the likes of the tasting rooms is an experience . You can also do the wine tram for something a little different .

If you fancy a bit of beach there is camps bay , it's not cheap (for South Africa that is) and you can pay nearly European prices but its worth it. Some of the hotels you can get would cost mega dough elsewhere but you can pay an affordable price . Some great bars and restaurants, you can do it as a overnight or two on your trip and it's impressive .

Cape Town waterfront v&a itself fairly diverse, if you feel like basing yourself there . You can use places like that as a hub before you explore the region .

I certainly wouldn't use a travel agent , book it all yourself because they'll add a bit and you'll think it's cheap but they'll be having you off .

Hiring a car is pennies as is fuel , internal flights the same . You can also get a driver for not much at all to do winery tours or take you about .

The mountain is worth a trip and you can certainly combine that with a stay in camps bay or Cape Town , a cab is fine or the big red tourist bus is worth a day trip to the mountain and you'll get to see a bit and it'll get you back to where you're staying.

In my experience one you've been you'll be going again.

If you need any specific help drop me a pm mate .

The company I work for has an office in Joberg. It is unfair of me to 1) brand the whole country to be dangerous based on what little I have seen and 2) obviously you have only a very small chance of any problems while out there anywhere, long as you don't do anything silly. But still no denying it is one of the more dangerous countries that people would call a tourist destination.

My comments were firmly tongue in cheek and not meant to be taken seriously.

No problem fella and that's fair .

As I say joberg is to be fair a different proposition . The Cape Town region in particular is popular with a lot of people including celebs and sports stars I doubt they'd visit and buy homes there is if was as bad as its painted.

It's certainly not perfect but the Cape is my favourite place in the world , you can literally have three or four different holidays in one trip . The fact you can live like a king certainly helps as well .

All my South African colleagues certainly have a better way of life for roughly the same money! Nice houses, nice cars. They do tend to live in gated communities, but like you say that could be a Joberg issue more than a SA issue in general.
