Download and Sonisphere keep recycling headliners. Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Prodigy, Linkin Park, Slipknot, etc keep popping up.

I think thats more of an issue to do with metal not producing any decent headline acts rather than the festivals themselves.

Possibly, but would be good if they thought outside the box for once. Maybe a grunge act like Soundgarden? Pearl Jam? Or even Daft Punk considering Prodigy is a dance act?

Every festival is, it´s the same stuff every year. The last real breakthrough headliners in the past 7 years was Mumford and Sons probably.

To a lesser extent though.

Download and Sonsiphere are the biggest offenders, I'd say.

Although Leeds/Reading are getting that way; Blink-182 have headlined twice in 4 years, Paramore keep popping up for example. Although Eminem last year was a bit of a shock headliner.

Mastodon will be headlining these festivals in the next 5-7 years. Other than that I can't think of a "new" metal band with that sort of potential. Plenty of brilliant bands out there like Protest the Hero but they'll never be as big as the likes of Iron Maiden

@DanEFC92 Yeah Eminem was about out of left-field. But, there aren´t many bands big/good enough to headline festivals at the moment.

Soundgarden played Download two years ago i think?

I would have put money on Pearl Jam playing a festival this year. And i think The Gaslight Anthem are one or two albums away from being headline material. Other than that in a few years it will be Bullet For My Valentine headlining, no doubt.

The National may have graduated to headliners this year, there are headlining Primavera over here in Barcelona.
