So, finally looking to get on the property ladder and frankly I'm quite clueless.

Sorted mortgage out and ready to bid, but I'm not sure how much I should be paying for solicitors fees. Been quoted £720 and I don't think that seems to bad. Anyone got any rough ideas? Cheers

Sounds fine. Think mine was about 600 a couple of years ago.

That sounds quite reasonable mate. Due to there being so many they have to be competitive so they all charge pretty much the same. Some will throw in stuff like vouchers for carpets etc, but they're a rip, as you have to spend hundreds to get the discounts. I'd use a local firm, as being able to walk in and talk to someone means you won't get fobbed off on the phone .

Is there not a way you can do it yourself, or do you 100% have to have a solicitor on board and pay them hundreds?

Nah, there's a couple of bits you could do yourself, but otherwise, you have to leave it to the 'professionals'.

As above, definitely go local, avoid the online ones. I'm sure some of the online ones are decent but if you have problems its so much better to have a name and a face to go talk to.

The £720 have come from the ones HSBC recommended, and it says in the paperwork that HSBC would employ the same firm, so surely that would be a pro too?

Well they're all professionals, just some are good and some are rubbish.

Not got any personal recommendations from friends you can use?

I meant a pro in terms of you wouldn't have two companies dealing with it. And not really, most of my friends couldn't even remember what they paid when asked -.-

HSBC recommended

And I wonder why that was?

My cousin works for one in Birkenhead, (I think). Charles Roberts. (Again ?) Did my last sale a few years back for about 1/2 what you are being quoted. Not mates rates either. Now a purchase is more time consuming I guess, but it was all done via email/post, and excellent.

Give them a call if I was you. If they ask how you came to call them, say Stuarts cousin suggested it. The Blue one. He will know!
