Sol Campbell: "I would've been England captain for 10 years if I was white"

Would Sol Campbell have been England captain for 10 years had he been white?

  • clearly, just look at John Terry's 34 captancies

No - shearer, beckham and terry were all captains when he was an England player (the latter when he wasn't a main player) and they were all far better players, he's just pathetic bringing up the race card like this as ince was captain on the night of one of the best England performances in the last 20 years.

No doubt in a few years when he doesn't get a managers job (or at a high enough level) he will play the race card when the reality is very very different, as in that enormous chip on his shoulder

Who gave him permission to speak ??

Only joking...... But seriously..... Sol was a fantastic player and probably deserved to captain England.... But based on ability not skin colour..... Sounds like a bitter rant to me.

quite possibly. Still have no idea why owen was made captain
Because he was a bigger name player and better to sell the team England brand?

Heskey was also captain once too, and Campbell was captain a few times, ditto Ferdinand so he doesn't really have a leg to stand on.

Utter rubbish from Sol here.

He wasn't captain because Beckham and Shearer were better options.

The Owen bit was a little odd but highly doubt skin colour was the reason.

Wasn't Paul Ince captain during this time too? In fact yes, I'm certain he was.

Makes you wonder if he actually has any grounds for saying that aside from him not being given the armband? Given the gravity of the accusation it's kinda sad that you can toss it around seemingly so easily.

I agree with the sentiments so far, I voted "not really" myself. I support equal rights just like the rest of you, but think that we should also be aware of when positive discrimination goes too far.

Like when Ince and Barnes claim they don't get top managerial jobs because of their race.

Non story for me.

Campbell's a very flawed character so, when he says "I think the FA didn't want me to have a voice", I'd say he's right, but not because he's black. Owen being made captain was the ultimate in popcorning though.

Beckham was never a captain. Peter Taylor wanted to make a name for himself in his short time and went for the biggest name. Never shut up about it.

The other main reason Sol Campbell never got it was he was too quiet compared to other players in the England team. Gary Neville never got it and he was more captain material. Using race as a reason can be answered with Rio Ferdinand.
