For what you're doing I'd use LibreOffice.

Their biased comparison: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Feature_Comparison:_LibreOffice_-_Microsoft_Office .

Also I find the layout quite nice.

You also have a Welsh version and aids for older people.

Cheers Armel,
That's really useful !! Many thanks.

Is it a problem if I don't speak Welsh and would rather not catch aids ?
Considers banning myself for being facetious ;)

Yeah clumsy wording, also I thought you were Welsh so it was meant as an extra selling point.

When you download it you can download extensions/templates for all sorts of functionalities you probably won't need..

The main criticism on here seems to be the look of the program; I honestly think it looks okay.

fancy outing a mod as being welsh! it says in the application pack, only L4 scousers need apply!

Serious question...
Are there folks out there who use the free-to-download Open Office rather than Microsoft Office?

If so, how does it compare... Favourably or not?

Serious comments and opinions will be appreciated.

Facetious comments liable to result in threadbans :)
As an ex wordoerfect and lotus aficionado, I utterly detest the MS offering, and the way they bulldozed away superior programs just by the might if their advertising. Having said that, even though I find word utterly woeful, I have become a big fan of Excel in recent years.

So I have looked at various free office versions, all of which are capable, the word processors tending to he better, what puts me off though is that the spreadsheets just don't seem to offer the same capability. Perhaps it's my lack of familiarity with them, but I seem to always go back to Excel just because I know how to do stuff.

I've always found OpenOffice to be fine, but don't do anything specialised in it. Think it should be fine if you just want basic writing/spreadsheets, and looks decent/close enough to Office (pre-ribbon?).
