It’s a total debacle down here. The airport at Dallas-Fort Worth reached -2 F this morning (that’s almost -19 C) and we have about 4 inches of snow on the ground. It hasn’t been this cold here in over 70 years. It sounds like we were supposed to have rotating power outages to conserve energy, but so many power plants went offline so quickly that the grid operators couldn’t rotate them once they started. It doesn’t make financial sense to winterize the equipment because this is such an extreme event.
I’ve been very lucky to keep the power on so far. I live in a neighborhood with older houses, and we all have gas heaters which I’m sure has helped a lot, our electric usage is very low. It’s been this cold before and it’s snowed this much before, but it’s never been this cold and snowed this much before. More snow coming tonight but at least it won’t be quite as cold.
