Alright Gents,

I'm just taking the first baby steps into quitting (4 weeks in)... and although to many that's the most difficult period, for me I'm struggling more now than before.

I think the biggest problem for me is that smoking goes hand in hand with footy. A half time smoke in the boozer and the one from kirkdale station to GP are part of the ritual. Even over the festive period and all the temptations that come from that, the only time I have smoked is match days.

The thing that really pushed me into quitting was getting a whiff of a smoker a couple of days into quitting. Christ!

What's your experience of smoking?
Should I really be worried about cutting out the Match day smokes?
Some of you must have some decent tips for quitting?

Mate of mine gave up cold turkey and his biggest help was the recognition of the habitualness of it, sometimes he didnt want a fag but he need something to do with his hands or he always wanted/had one when (insert activity here). When he had those thoughts he either distracted himself or had a placebo such as sucking through the outer tube of a biro.

My Mrs gave up 6 years ago but she's a whopper

Exactly my problem, but I'd have to be the idiot in the corner with a straw dangling from my trap.
That's unfortunate, hope she was a whopper before too... if not ill reconsider quitting.

Yeah, that's another thing I've looked at. But keep seeing all these articles about 'popcorn lung', scared me off.

Do a few stripes instead

Another time I get cravings is driving. It's not easy racking up and steering.

My brother died a slow painful death because he smoked, I miss him...think of all those people that will miss you. PLEASE STOP NOW MY FRIEND!

Really sorry to hear that pal.
Being in my 20's I always think I'm invincible..
The things that always seem to go through my mind as positives to quitting are money, smell and not having to freeze in the winter.
I guess I never really think of the implications on others.
I'm surprised that comment that will probably hit home the most is #6!
Thanks for sharing that, it will defiantly help beat the cravings.

Read Allen Carr's book and you won't smoke again (unless bollocksed) simple really,

I'll give that a read when I'm home bud, thanks. But, I've seen the adverts heard the horror stories and it just never sank in until recently. Ill have a look at it though, when I do, ill let you know how I found it!

it goes so well for me until i have a drink, and then im smoking a superking in one toke etc.

Yeah, last time I trued quitting it fell on its arse after a few pints. This time round it hasn't been as big an issue, but I haven't had a big night out since I quit... so we'll see!

one day at a time mate keep at it. and everybody else trying.
for some it's easier than others, for some it's just impossible, but a lot of that is not can't but won't. I mean you see them sat outside the hospital in a wheel chair puffin away...no hope for them.

Gave up a 40 a day habit overnight and haven't smoked since
Having both arms amputated might seem a bit extreme but sorted me out
