Quite a man, or a bit of a loon. Depending on your viewpoint.

When I was at university (history) I had a professor by the name of John Charmley who argued that Churchill should have 'withdrawn' from the War and let Hitler and Stalin slug it out. He argued that it would prolong the British Empire and delay the election of a Labour government - both of which was desired by Churchill.
Needless to say this was not a popular viewpoint but it was interesting to hear nonetheless. I found out that he went to Rock Ferry High School, also my school, but this wasn't something he boasted about strangely enough. He had mysteriously acquired an accent that could cut glass all day.

19th century relic when it came to domestic policy, very much in favour of keeping the 'establishment' in place. In terms of great Prime Ministers Attlee wins for me hands down, I shudder to think what state this country would be in without his drastic post war social reforms.

Churchill - Great War trime leader though I'll give him that.

Useless fact: His grandson is a tory MP currently.
