Who qualifies for a Europa League place in the Premier League?
How do you qualify for a Europa League place in England? And what happens with winners of the FA Cup and League Cup?
For Everton, currently sat in seventh place in the Premier League and out of both cups, it is an important question.
The rules around Europa and Champions League qualification are constantly changing, but assuming Everton can keep up their form and finish seventh or higher there are a number of scenarios that could take place, resulting in a number of entrance points to European competition.
At the risk of jinxing a top seven finish, here are all the permutations on Europa League places.
Europa League qualification
Finishing fifth in the Premier League is the only way to guarantee a Europa League spot through league position.
English teams have three slots in the Europa League.
The other two go to the winners of the FA Cup and the League Cup – but runners up no longer get a European spot.
In the League Cup this year if Southampton, who are unlikely to finish top five, beat Manchester United, they will get the second Europa League place.
If Manchester United win and finish in the top five the place will go to sixth place in the league. If Manchester United win the League Cup and finish sixth, they will still go to the Europa through the League Cup win.
The FA Cup winners will also qualify for the Europa League.
However, if the FA Cup winners come from the top five in the Premier League another league place will be added.
If Manchester United finish top six and win the League Cup, and the FA Cup winner finishes in the top five in the league, the seventh place team will qualify for the Europa League.
For example if Everton finish seventh and United win the League Cup, they would need Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United or Liverpool (assuming they all finish top six) to win the FA Cup.
In that scenario, seventh will mean an early start to the season through the Europa qualifiers. Sixth place means entering at the third qualifying round and fifth place means entering the group stages.
