Or, it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good. Whichever way you look at it, Everton's draw with Newcastle tonight had one group of Merseysiders sighing with relief. And no, we're not talking about Liverpool fans. Merseyside retailers have been having a worrying time in the last few weeks. Georgina Foofoo, a spokesperson for Merseyside Association of Retailers (MAR), explained.
''Well, it's common knowledge that the blues are slow starters. And if you factor in the usual disappointing transfer window, you've got ideal circumstances for increased bleach sales. So naturally local retailers have stocked up on bleach this summer expecting the usual rush of fuming blues.''
However, this year hasn't panned out as expected. Most Evertonians were pleased with the business done before the August 31 transfer deadline and on the pitch the team came out of the blocks flying. Stringing together impressive back to back wins against Man Utd and Aston Villa aswell as a route of Layton Orient in the first round of the COC.
We asked Ms Foofoo how this had affected bleach sales. ''Oh we've been selling less than in the same period for the last few years. This is doubly worrying because most of us had bought as much as 4 times our normal stock.''
So after defeat at the Hawthornes and tonight's dropped points against Newcastle with controversial refereeing decisions robbing the blues of a deserved victory, will sales take an upturn?
''Oh I think so and I certainly hope so'' Ms Foofoo told us. ''We obviously wish all our local sportsmen the best of luck but business is business. I've only had one Everton fan buying bleach in recent weeks. His name's David and he's ever so nice.. He can finger me if he likes.'' She added.
