Lots of media and fan cries for him to be dropped...

As good as he is are England better off with no Rooney?

What you think ??

Does he start in Brazil?

I think that a healthy squad has a number of options available to them. England obviously have Barkley champing at the bit to play in that #10 role behind Sturridge, so why not give him a go in a friendly?

Can you imagine if Ross starts Wednesdays friendly in Rooney's No.10 role and has a blinder?? The cries for his inclusion at the expense of Rooney will be huge...

I'm not sure I like where this is going tbh!! Don't want the nations hopes moving onto Ross.

Nope, he's England's best player, the only one in the squad approaching world class. Might not be in the best of form but here's hoping he sparks into life, he should be at his peak at this tournament.

Outside of the PL, his record isn't really all that. He averages a goal every 2.5 games in Europe, and one every 2.3 games for England. Obviously his record in major tournaments is well known, but if you look at who he's scored against for England, of his 38 goals, only 6 have come against international sides inside the top 10 in the FIFA rankings (2 against Brazil in friendlies, 1 against Argentina in a friendly, 2 against the Swiss in the 2004 Euros and 1 against them in Euro 2012 qualifying). Given that few would really regard the Swiss as a top nation, it's probably fair to say that he's never really done the goods against a top side in a match that really matters.

It's amazing really that of his 80 or so caps, just 17 have come against sides that you could really suggest were top drawer (top 10 in the rankings + France and Holland)

Whilst I agree that he hasn't performed as he should have on the international scene, he still outperforms his peers, certainly his current ones. He's the best of what England has available I think.

Don't get me wrong, he's still a valuable member of the squad, and England has precious few decent strikers as it is. I just think that those attacking options need to be flexible. Look at how Martinez juggled things around this year. We were incredibly effective late on in games because of our strong bench. With international defences being strong, there has to be an argument for having a strong bench to attack tiring defences when they're at their most vulnerable.

I see it as a bit like rugby in a way. No one really frowns upon someone starting from the bench as they still play an active role, just at different times of the game. With the heat and all that, maybe it's best to save Rooney for the second half of games? Having him rotating with Barkley would be no bad thing imo. Do the same with Wellbeck/wotsisnamefromtheRS and Lallana/Millner

This is why I hate I when people quote stats to get across how good/bad a player is. Obviously Rooney has not quite hit the heights as an England player but there is so much more to his game than just goals.....

Yeah nobody should be guaranteed 90 minutes of every game, but I think for the big games you hope the big players stand up.

I wonder if he just doesn't bother getting in shape for tournaments because he knows he'll always get picked?

I mean, Roy took him to Euro 2012 when he knew he couldn't play in the first two games

If I'm Rooney, that tells me that I can coast a little regardless of my fitness

For sure. How many assists has he made for England? (not a leading question - I have no idea)
