I'm well aware of how and why Bill Shankly attained God-like status for that lot over the park in years gone by. Fair play to the man, he transformed them from 2nd division yo-yoers to a top 1st division side. I must admit I'm curious as to how some of his more famous remarks were received at the time - I.e. "There are 2 teams in this city - Liverpool and Liverpool reserves" and "if Everton were playing at the bottom of my garden I'd draw the curtains" (quite ironic seeing how he was shafted by LFC and welcomed with open arms by EFC in his retirement). Was this just considered acceptable banter for which we gave as good back?
I only heard some of his remarks for the first time a few years later when LFC were quite dominant, so for me they seemed to be the height of arrogance and disrespect. Even if they weren't intended that way, I can't help feeling they were the basis for a lot of the self-aggrandising, taunting, entitled and patronising behaviour that seemed to permeate their players and their fan base then and still does to this day. Was it Shankly who set the tone for some of the worst RAWK-ish behaviour we still see nowadays or did it grow up organically from the arrogant tossers playing for them in the 70's/80's??
Views from anyone who was around in that era?
