Another nail in the famous competition,s coffin. Why not just have fewer pointless international friendlies if they want less fixture congestion? Given that there are only 8 teams left in the competition at thst stage anyway it seems like another "let's favour the big successful clubs" gesture again to me, similar to the bye they get in the second round of the league cup.

Absolutely.

I can only reason that they've done it to stop fixture congestion for teams still in Europe.

There's hundreds of replays in the early rounds that cause big disruption for non-league/lower league teams. I don't see them looking to address that. If lesser teams reach the QF stage this can only effect them negatively, in that they can't scrape an away draw to get home advantage, and they'll have no possibility of a lucrative replay for the club.

The Cup has been on its arse for a while now.

Could argue that if they scrapped replays at earlier rounds, the small clubs who get good ties could miss out on big revenue. IE an Exeter getting a replay away at Spurs etc.

I think they should scrap all replays to be honest. We suffered cos of the Utd replay against West Ham this season.

But in general replays only ever favour the bigger sides. As a smaller club you've a far better chance of beating a bigger side over 120 minutes and penalties than you have over 210 mins and penalties. Replays are like a security blanket for the better sides.

Makes perfect sense to me. It was fixture congestion that meant we had to play Liverpool days before the Semi final, and we weren't even in Europe.

Not everything has to be a conspiracy.
Rubbish, how about if a team like us fights out a draw in 90 minutes away to Arsenal/City etc,we then lose our right to get them back to our place and the extra time and penalties would then be played with the home side having all the support in their favour.

I didn't intend to suggest they should do that, but reading back it looks like I did haha.

It's not a huge deal I suppose, but in my eyes this minor change can only benefit the top clubs and none of the lower league clubs.

It could just as easily be the other way around where we could have a home draw against such a team and then get tonked away. I would far prefer extra time and penalties in a cup game at home than having to play another match away where you are much more likely to lose.

Moaning for the sake of it.

Home league and cup competitions mean little to the football authorities in general. UEFA in particular. If they can get more european football on the telly the bigger their advertising revenue. Dont be surprised that a further reduction in the number of teams in each division will see an expansion in the amount of european games staged.
