Don't know if anyone has noticed this on the news recently but take a look at this website if you have kids or are interested in the state of education. Just look what the government has planned for our city's schools in four years time. One example, Calderstones school to lose aroud 500k a year ( and around 14 teachers). Take this level of cuts across the city and country and they are set to devastate education in many areas as no rises in the education budget are planned. The argument is they are increasing funding to rural areas.
This will basically see teachers over 40 on the scrapheap,( as too expensive) to be replaced by those in their 20's who will receive the lowest pay on offer. Don't enter teaching if you are considering it - there really is no future in it.

Why have the government got a hard on for rural schools ?

Ps - Hopefully Caldys is where my lad is going to next year :(

Why is there any surprise in these things? Did people think the tories would look after their interests and those of the next generation?

What would once cause an outcry now passes as a great big meh in the minds of the British public such is their gullible acquiescence and selfishness. This belief that it can be fixed further down the line if it goes too far is so misplaced and ill judged it is quite ludicrous.

People are too busy being offended by things it's fashionable to be offended by, than to be offended by this sort of thing. If you express concern about politics one is dismissed as a ranter. If you express outrage at the result of an x factor vote, you're one of the species.

Last year felt like the early years of my teaching vocation in the late 80s. The buildings were crumbling, books getting dog-eared and torn, no spare pens.... (tory government).
During the late 90s (labour) we had massive investment and schools actually became pleasant places to work and learn. The trouble was that the vultures circled sniffing money and exam boards started a process of changing the syllabus every couple of years so that they could flog new overpriced text books.
Now of course it's tory again so everything has ground to a halt in terms of cash. I decided that I wasn't happy to go back to three to a book and work under workhouse conditions with large classes again.

Funny though, during labour rule, when we had money to paint over the 1960s painted walls, I was telling younger teachers to pick their colours wisely, as after labour comes tory, and their chosen paint would have to last 30 years. They thought I was being daft.

Some of the wages that are paid, especially in Senior Schools are astronomical. I know a head teacher of a Catholic school, who is on a £110,000 salary. There's a lot of Directors in London City who are no where near on that amount.

I don't believe in the cuts, but I do believe that school salaries should come in line with those in the Private Sector.
