Scam calls

Its happening loads at the moment. Particularly annoying for me as I work for a company under contract to the DSP with a huge caseload of people. So a lot of them aren't answering their phones or are very suspect of us when we call
I never thought of the people who actually work for these places and have to make legitimate calls.. must be a nightmare.

I've been getting a few lately with numbers that share the same first 6 numbers as my number.. one even left a voicemail.. apparently they were from the Department of social protection department and were going to cancel my PPS number as I have been engaged in criminal activity by claiming pandemic unemployment benefit while continuing to work.. they want a small payment to rectify this.. is this much of an issue elsewhere? Its a pain in the face being almost daily and some days multiple times.
I got about 8 calls from different numbers that all were similar to my number a few weeks ago. The tax office and Amazon are who these automated voices say they're from.

Still preferable to random solar panel companies cold calling.

I just answer and then as soon as they start their pitch I just leave the phone on tbe desk. They can chat away to themselves as long as they like.

Get caller display .......MY ISP firm on the telephone package plusnet it's a free service ..... or pick the phone up & say sorry someones at the door just wait a minute then leave it there for 5 minutes - they put the phone down ....

I don't accept calls from withheld / private / unknown numbers, and still won't take the call if the number is displayed and I have any doubts at all.

The world might have changed, but people / organisations needing to contact you on a legitimate basis, can still use email / paper mail.

Despite the obituary being written, paper mail is still de rigeur for any correspondence from official state / governmental organisations.

The rule is simple really - if it seems fake/dodgy, then it probably is. Hang up on the call / delete the text and phone the listed number for the organisation in question, to check things out.
Ideally call back from a different number in case the scammer is still connected after hanging up.

All legitimate businesses understand well about calling back. Ironically it was the fraud department of my bank that I did this last with and they were more than fine with this.

I just don't answer any calls from numbers not listed in my contacts.
If it's somebody who is genuinely trying to contact me they can still do so by text.
After any 'missed' call I check the number via Whocalled.co.uk and then block.
Exact same as what I do if get any calls that dont know the number and not on my contacts list. I always check the whocalled site and them block the number.

Who rings people these days? If my phone goes I start pacing about fuming then go straight onto "who called me?" when she hangs up just to confirm my suspicions. She didn't find it funny the first time and still doesn't to this day.
