Coca Cola's Santa Claus is largely based upon the legend of Saint Nicholas, a bloke from latter day Turkey who was renowned for his good deeds. Foremost among these was his chance encounter with a poor family whose three daughters were due to get married. As was custom at the time, the father of the bride would have to pay a dowry, and the family couldn't afford that, so the daughters couldn't get married. Un-married women at the time would ordinarily go into prostitution, so upon hearing of this story good old Saint Nicholas decided to drop three sacks of gold down their chimney, and henceforth the tradition of giving presents to those who have been good was born.
Saint Nicholas' day is actually on the 5th December and it's been blatantly knicked and bastardised by British and Dutch christians, and the bible is quite clear on that (Leviticus 6:1-5).
"If anyone sins and commits a breach of faith against the Lord by deceiving his neighbor or through robbery, thou shall with due haste be turned into a duck and burned at the stake until well done, after which your neighbor is permitted to nibble your giblets..."
Don't say you haven't been warned.
