I'm jealous of you. I was going to make the 28 hr. drive. I had the whole trip planned out and even checked into hotels but wasn't able to find a job to have the money to go.

I thought it would be just over 4 hours.

NYC to LA is just over 4 hours, depending on the airline I know because I have done it..so SLC cant be more than 3.5hours away.
