Yup, its not about the characters being funny its about making the people they interview look like complete cretins... and he's nailed it on that front.

It's not the characters that are the entertainment, it's the dumbass politicians he brings out.
Ali G, Borat and Bruno were all entertaining characters, as well as being good at getting people to look really stupid.

Hopefully the show will improve but just didn't think the first was that good. Let's see what tonight's episode is like anyway

I don't care about his characters.

The last segment of the first show was priceless, with the gun-lovers. He got Trent Lott to speak into a live camera that children should be armed.

I'd cry if I didn't laugh

That's what the politics here have become, or at least what I've come to recognize as I've gotten older. The moderate politicians have been shouted down and the politicians have been pushed to the extreme ends. Some of these people are batty.

The gun bit was good I agree. Thought the art bit was rubbish. The bit with the Nira the liberal was good in parts but the whole bit about the dolphin was just stupid. And the Bernie Sanders with Wayne bit was just meh. He didn't get him to reveal anything strange or to have him hit back against idiotic far-right voters and it wasn't even funny. Sanders just came across disinterested. Apart from the gun bit it just seemed like people indulging someone they don't agree with but don't want to be rude to.

You can say you don't care about the characters but they are what he is using to get people to lower their guard. If that doesn't work then the show doesn't really work that well. Especially in comparison to his older stuff which I absolutely loved.
