Didn't happen in the end sadly, did about 15km. A path I wanted to go on was closed off due to a fallen tree/branch and I cba to try and work out another way lol.

The rain cleared in the afternoon here so it was just very windy

Shame, as I think off road running is much more fun when it’s muddy. Slows your times right down, but you work harder with the mud.

I’m doing one next Sunday, on the moors in West Yorkshire, at the back of Hebden Bridge.

I love moorland running, as usually there’s no nutty hills, it’s always boggy and muddy, with gorgeous views. Proper old school cross country

That sounds great.

I'm finally doing some races next march. A 7 mile one with some mates and then a half marathon in Rutland, which looks mainly trail.

If it’s the one in March, I looked at doing it , but it’s just a big too far away for me.

It looks to be a really fast course, with a mix of terrain.

I did a 10k race today in the most brutal wind I’ve ever raced in 35 mph/ 59 mph gusts according to weather site. After 1/2 mile I chucked any notion of a decent time away and just knuckled down into the wind. Fortunately it was a sunny day and I enjoyed it, and my first race in my new M70 class!

This week it’s more tapering , eating cake and carbo loading in prep for my 51km/33 mile ultra trail race on 13th. I’ve gone past the “ worrying will I finish’ stage into the “ bring it on “ stage :)

I did a fell half marathon today mate, on the moors around Calderdale Valley in West Yorks.

Your day sounds very much like my day with the wind, but without the bogs ! ( nearly lost my shoes a few times and went on my arse a couple of times too )

To do an ultra in the M70 group is just outstanding mate and my advice to you would just forget about times, enjoy the day and just concentrate on finishing.

Sounds like you had a great day on the fells well done , trails and hills have been wrecking my knees a bit so it was nice to do a road race today.

Yeah I understand where you’re coming from , but I only know one way of running marathons , which I’ll apply to the ultra , my “ Sydney or the bush!” method of just going for it! Start off slowly, take the hills in the first half easy , speed up downhill, hang on in there if I can after 26 miles. I know I could do a run/ walk combination right from the start and make it but I want to try to run a steady pace all the time. I have a realistic time in mind, done a number long trail runs in training, if it goes wrong then so be it , but Id rather finish knowing I couldn’t have given anymore than wondering “ what if?”

Weather will play a big part too, fingers crossed for a good day ;)

Did my first ever " self navigated " race at the weekend ( map and compass ) on the moors around the Calder Valley in West Yorks.

It was a bit of a bottle tester tbh, as there where 6 checkpoints, that you had to find and check into, to enable you to get a finishing time.

Most of the field, where from local running clubs, so not only did they know where they were going, but also they knew the terrain, so they all hared off, leaving the likes of me and a few others plodding around at the back, trying to work out the route.

If it`d been misty or foggy, I reckon I`d very easily have got lost tbh and I think in future I`ll be sticking to races with fully marked out courses.

It was too hard core for me.

Well that’s my first, possibly only Ultra, done and dusted, Dava Way 50 km/32 miles yesterday . Conditions were great , but my knees, hips body really struggle on the trails, and my pace is nowhere near what I’d expect on the road . Sure enough , after 18 miles the pace had gone and it became a slow , consistent, plod to the finish , avoiding walking except for hills. But I got there in the end 6 hrs 30 mins. Legs and bits ache today , but no major concerns . Streching , foam roller , massage gun, a bit on my cross trainer have all helped.

Well done mate, that’s a cracking time for 32 miles under any circumstances.

As you’ve just found out, road and trail are like night and day over long distance !

The problem with the long ones, is the
training takes over your life and one ultra was enough for me too ;)

The beauty of them is that when you go and shorter runs now, you enjoy them more, as mentally you know you’re only out for 2/3 hrs, so you relax and just enjoy the day, rather than having to slog your guts out .

Thanks. Not really though, over 40 years ago I was orienteering, hill running, mountain marathons etc now mainly road running so I’ve long known my body is not as good on the long trails! You’re right, they do take over your life so back to a bit more normality now,!
