League is the more enjoyable spectacle live, but union is a better game overall. At first I never understood all the lying around but now I roughly know what's going on, there's a lot more to union.
Union is terrible live though. Unless you're in the gods, you have no idea what is going on in the rucks and mauls.
When Union is played well and is a fast, flowing game, it's a superb spectacle. Too often however, it seems to get bogged down in rucks that barely get over the gain line, scrums whose sole purpose seems to be to win a penalty (whilst sucking up huge amounts of time), and kick tennis from full back to full back.
Of course, League can also be a dull watch, but I think you tend to get more exciting plays to generate try scoring opportunities, which is what rugby should be all about, in League than Union.
I read recently for instance, how Burgess had been rollicked at Bath for going looking for something to do as he was bored in his centre position by the lack of activity. He's a guy who would make 30+ tackles a match and probably 20 carries of the ball in League, and he does a fraction of that in Union. And that's in a Bath team that are pretty fluid, with a fine back line and a fly-half that tries to play them in rather than kick all the time.
Anyway, with regards to Super League, the recent World Club thing reinforced how far behind the NRL we are. Souths look an incredibly good team, even without Sam. I can't think of a better spectacle in either code than Greg Inglis in full flow. Phenomenal player.
Wigan have started the season poorly, and look creatively off the pace right now, with Williams settling in and Smith and the full back struggling for form. I'm sure they, together with Leeds, Saints and Warrington will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. Saints are probably favourites at the moment, but very early days.
