Rooney Utd Record

Player Valuation: £8m
Unless it's Everton I probably don't care what other teams or players are up to - it's no more than a passing interest to me - other than to keep up with general gossip when it comes up with the lads. So when it comes to Rooney he falls into this camp with me; used to play for us, he moved on to another team and we moved on. I was never one to abuse the lad when he returned to Goodison for Utd or to jump on a bandwagon pretending he'd consider coming back after Fergusons testimonial.

But I'll admit I'm pleased for the lad today in breaking their record. He's had an incredible career, may not have hit the heights that were predicted as a teenager, but he'll look back at his medals, goals and captaining England to say to any critic, he ain't done bad. More than that, he's been a top player who deserves every accolade that comes his way.

Well Done Wayne, great player and your goalscoring record for United is rich reward - only regret is that you couldnt have had a twenty year career in a Royal Blue shirt - but in fairness, you ain't done too bad.

It's a fine achievement alright but I can't see anyone being that bothered about it the way you might if it was someone else. There doesn't seem to be much good will around for Wayne - Bloke's just wore out his welcome. Hasn't been an exciting player for years and years, no longer even that good to the point where the Mancs hate him, trousering 300K per week - it's just not a combination that captures the imagination.

You say he hasn't hit the heights but why hasn't he?

All time scorer for a big famous club like Manchester United.

All time scorer for England.

Captain of club and country

Won everything there is to win both European cup and domestically.

Not really sure how much more he could have achieved here to be honest? I'm made up for him to do it. As sad as it is we can't talk about him doing it for us, he left us and forged a top career at one other club. He didn't leave to be a mercenary he left to be successful and stayed loyal to that one club to play at the highest level.

Forget the fact he came from us, he has had a brilliant career and deserves to break these records.

I guess it's not the 'what' but the 'how'. He's been a good player and fortunate to be a good player in a good (and occasionally exceptional) Utd side. But the individual performances just haven't hit the heights expected. He was genuinely expected to become one of the best in the world, yet he's never made a dent on the ballon d'Or or FifPro lists.

What a tit Mourinho was in his interview. Fair play to the little turd Wayne, they hate scousers but they've now got one who will be top of their scoring charts for about 40 years lol

That is a fair point.

But when you look at who is deemed to be top of the list then it is very hard to compare. Rooney may never have been the player we thought he would be ill admit yes. But when the best players in the world are Messi and Ronaldo, that goes beyond the world class category.

I suppose he has just been a top class English striker. In the same thinking as your shearers for example. They never rivalled the Ronaldos in the game but in England they were a cut above the rest.

And the rest

Honestly don't see that record being beaten

Rooney's not a patch on Shearer, imo.

Fair challenge mate. I'm not here to champion Rooney - I made my point - pleased for him. His record speaks for itself - any defence of my comment is probably restricted to my comparison with C Ronaldo - they were similar age, both were seen apeers, perhaps Rooney was the more senior at one stage in his Utd career - not sure - but I reckon and you know, from a comparable starting point one achieved more than the other. So, apologies for any offence caused.
