Roma fined £42,000 for racist chants in game at AC Milan

So I was listening to something about curtailing human behavior. People used to jaywalk all the time so instead of arresting every jaywalker (or fining them), this guy Lefferts (a PR guy) decides that public ridicule is the best solution. The term Jay (meant idiot, simpleton, hicks) was associated with the person crossing outside the crosswalks through a public ad campaign. The important part was to have non-law enforcement reinforce the image that what they were doing wasn't worth the ridicule. Unfortunately, racism is very much built into Italian and Russian (and spread throughout eastern European) culture so it's much harder to discourage that kind of behavior. If you look at the Russian language, there's about 5 common ways to saying black person in a derogatory way (Yay WC 2018). I was watching a WC 06 game between Ghana and USA and it was in Russian. I can't recount how many times they referred to players in this way. When they were talking about American players, guys like DeMarcus Beasley and Eddie Johnson in the derogatory form, rather than just saying their name. Anyway, it really is about having the people around the racists to ridicule their behavior and them as a person, not just say that it's wrong.

I didn't know about the scold's bridle until recently. How funny would it be if racists were forced to wear that? Have a little cage with a mouth gag and a little bell and walk around town and have feces smeared on you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scold's_bridle No it's not a snm accessory.

Went to a match before Chrismas in Rome (Roma v udinese) couldn't get tickets for curva sud so went to curva Nord,I heard a few stories before I left that their fan base was split in 2, as Roma were always seen to be the "left wing" club in Rome to Lazio being the "right wing" club (lazio were Mussolini's team) before the match started as far as I could make out there was to be a minutes silence for troops in Afghanistan and the curva sud boo'ed and chanted thru the minutes silence, the ultras in the curva Nord were going mental at this, they also seemed to try to out chant each other with differant songs, from what I heard is that the "right wing minded" fans of Roma have set up their own ultras in the curva Nord, hence, when any of the black players from udinese got the ball there was a few monkey chants, got worse as the game went on as Roma were winning 2-0 and lost 2-3! There were some fans (mainly women) who turned to those who were racially abusing players to "shut the f*%k up!" Have to say that to be in the company of fans when the do that monkey chant it can be very unsettling as its so out of date. I think a lot of clubs in Italy have a bad racial element involved with there support, but they seem to be splitting into 2 groups, I think it would be easy enough to eradicate the bad apples very quickly as they seem to all congregate together in a certain part if the ground........it'll just take balls on the side of the Italian clubs to throw these ultras out.
By the way, Italian football is full of politics ( which makes it very interesting) every club has some sort of political view......check out Livorno........ultras are mental, very left wing and communist!.........wave a lot of Che Guevara flags, good fun when the likes of Lazio and juve are in town.

Sadly, racism is about 10% as bad for modern football as the Blatter-led FIFA is.
Doesn't matter who the players are, the game is the same everywhere. That's the reality of politics.

Thanks for sharing. Maybe I shouldn't have said Italian culture because that is simply misrepresenting. Italy wasn't unified until recently and many Italians have pride in the regions they come from. They like what makes them different from everyone else. To some degree that fuels the hatred for what's "different". Also, the **** economy and influx of foreign workers, especially in trades/markets that they've typically taken pride in has made them increasingly hostile (just like any country that has immigrants, whether they're legal or not).
