Who was better? Totally subjective IMO. Prefer Zep myself, but Stones are ace too.
Influential? Stones in terms of impact on popular culture, like The Beatles were in the 60s also. On Music, Zep I reckon.
Why? Zep reinvented how bands recorded, kept their money, toured, and performed live. A framework that, ironically, the Stones have made a living from since the mid 80s.
 

Well both we're 'inspired' by Robert Johnson, but for the best 'modern band' interpretation of his relatively small catalogue of songs, I reckon Cream were better.

Very true in both cases, but I reckon Zep eventually drew upon a far wider range of influences than the Stones did.

A poor example but I can't find the exact youtube vid I remember which runs to 6 parts going right through thier catalogue
