Hello everyone - there seems to be a lot of talk about this being Rowell's big season (fingers crossed). But just how likely is he to hold down a spot in the first 11??

He will compete with Cahill to play as AM, he can be used alongside Arteta in central midfield, when we will be expected to attack heavily, and at push he can play as right midfielder.
But at the end, if there will be no major injuries, I don't think he will be a starter yet, Moyes won't drop Cahill this season.

Yeah, I was thinking it was going to be tough for him, especially when Fellaini gets back. But he's good enough to be in there and it seems like he's already maturing. I haven't seen any pre-season, but it sounds like he's been in form and ready for the responsibility.

i think he will have a great season for us and think he will prevent fellaini from getting straight back into the team when he gets back

I wouldn't mind getting a look at him as centre back.

As long as he settled in there quick enough, surely him and Jags would be rock solid. He's definately better on the ball than Distin.

This sounds ridiculous at the moment, he is closer to be a centre forward these days :).

I know. Its bizarre to be talking about whether or not a player should be in at centre back or up front. Suppose that's how good he is.

The thing with JR is that he has the composure on the ball and a good enough reading of the game that he could easily be developed in attacking midfield, central midfield, defensive midfield, sweeper, or center half - basically, anywhere straight down the middle. I honestly think he could play any of those roles, but hope he is mostly deployed right at the heart of central midfield. You shape your team around your best players, and Jack is destined to be one of our very best.

How was he today? Haven't heard much of his performance.

He looked dangerous every time he touched the ball. VERY confident. Not afraid to pop with either foot, looks strong and fluid. My guess is we're having a different conversation about his playing time at the end of the season than at the beginning. Should be a lock to start all the early cup games though, I would think.

The question is, could he develop into a Beckenbauer type player, who (whilst primarily a defender) was given license from sweeper to getting involved in attacking moves?

I thought that position was on the decline, but Marquez looked brilliant in the WC in that role.

He is a superb player, it's hard to believe we have the depth in quality that might not make him a first 11 player.
