After watching 5+ matches a weekend including English, Spanish and Italian leagues, i noticed that virtually every game has at least one huge talking point when the topic is referees. Especially in England were we have pundits sitting in a cosy studio slating them for every decision made. As fans we are equally guilty in that respect, bearing in mind we have multiple angles and technology to zoom in and out of each talking point - referees dont.

Now i know some referees dont help themselves, some feel like they have to be in the spotlight with the players, names like clattenburg and webb spring to mind.

One referee that has impressed me in recent weeks is premier league official Robert Madley, especially during the newcastle vs southampton game (he did miss a penalty claim against jose fonte). It is Robert's demeanour and refusal to become friends with the likes of Gerrard and other referee harrasing idiots that make the referees jobs harder (again see gerrard and clattenburg - hand shakes, winks, smiles and blowing kisses).

My point being i like to see referees who are there to referee a game and not make friends, be professional, firm and fair. Im sure the list of referees who we can 'call out' regarding them three points are long as a giraffes neck.

Are there any other referees you guys dont mind officiating Wolfgang stark of Germany springs to mind.

By the way fifa football game referee Hayden Pennyfeather is up there with the worst !

Every time I've seen him, Roger East has had a stellar game, he's reffing us at the weekend. All ready for me to eat my words?

Personally I think PL has the best referees in the world. But still they do way too much errors. This season has had amazing screw ups by refs...something wrong in the system atm.

Whilst the Costa/Skrtl incident was an annoying one, and I think called wrong, I much prefer refs not to call penalty if they're not sure, or if it's inconclusive. Too many refs far too happy to award a pen/send someone off when it would be best to err on the side of caution.

Don't give a pen - nothing changes, scoreline remains the same, no-one gets sent off. Frankly, teams shouldn't be relying on winning penalties to win games, and if it's so borderline, the most times it'll be the attacker looking for it.

Too many games are ruined by poorly awarded penalties and unnecessary red cards. Refs need to ease off and let the game flow, and the Sky/MOTD analysers need to ease off scrutinising their every decision.

They need help from technology really, when you consider the stakes where every point could be worth nearly a million pounds (at least) a bad decision is not quite life and death but it's close. It's not even like technology would be hard to implement, there's already like a thousand cameras at every premier league game.

I know they're not entirely similar but if you were a pilot and you decided to ignore all the bits of modern technology in your plane and fly the old fashioned way you'd have your P45 before you left the runway since you're unnecessarily increasing the risk of flying

I think that referees in general are of a good standard. The pace at which the game is played is incredibly fast and to make decisions in real time
with just a few seconds to think about your decision and with very little back up is very difficult.

The problem that I have is that the bigger the club the more likely they are to get a decision in their favour, clubs at home are more likely to get a decision than an away time. Understandable maybe, but frustrating nonethe less.

I think generally speaking it is a case of judging a game solely by the law and not common sense, i mean Madley seen fonte's handball but thought the ball was struck too hard for him to move out of the way, now if he is right or wrong is up foe debate, but the pundits sit there saying 'how he has missed that ill never know'.

The ref didnt miss it, he just tried to use common sense.

.....not sure if this is more for World Football thread, but I'd be amazed if in the near future key decisions aren't taken out of the on pitch referees hands. TV informed decisions will not only happen, they will improve the experience of watching football.

It's basically the go to reaction of the vast majority of people involved in football : moan about the ref and call him crap.

Which in my view is utterly ridiculous and makes most of those people look like idiots. Refs have a very hard job and the complete over reaction to pretty much any decision they give from all corners of the game is embarrasing.

But thats just my view and i'm clearly in a minority.

The Cowboy calls it well in his post above. When teams whinge about the ref it deflects from the fact that they weren't good enough anyway. There will be times when a ref's decision (or lack of) does hugely influence a result (1977 semi!) but these are very few and far between. It's easier for managers and pundits to blame an official rather than say "Let's face it the goalie is :;@; and the winger can't cross".
In years to come we won't remember this season for Everton for the decisions that didn't go in our favour but the poor defensive displays and frustrating tactical manoeuvres. And quite rightly so.
