The 1999 FIFA World Player of the Year, who most recently played for Campeonato Brasileiro Serie C side Mogi Mirim, confirmed the news in a message posted on Instagram.

He said: "With tears in my eyes today I would like first to thank God, my family and all the support, the affection that I received during those 24 years as a player.

"Today I communicate to all my fans in the world, my history as a player came to the end. Just I have to thank the lovely career I have built over these years."

The news comes one month after Rivaldo completed the final accomplishment on his to-do list: competing in a football match on the same team as his 18-year-old son Rivaldinho.

Odd shaped head.

Utterly boss. Remember him scoring an amazing overhead for Barca that I think either won them the league or got them into Europe

Boss left foot. Wooden peg for a right. Some sensational goals over his career, the over head was a stand out.

Pretty cool to play in the same game as your son, I hope his right foot is better than his dad's!

total legend. Very underrated in general I think. Wasn't far off Zidanes level when in his prime. Was more consistently amazing for me than Zidane when in his prime, but career-wise didn't stay at his top level as long as Zizou.

This is one of my favourite Barca moments. Last game of the season vs Valencia, both going for the last Champs League spot and Valencia needing just a point...

Proper legend him. One of those players were he looked like he glided and had all the time in the world, as well as having a proper skull head. Beast of a player.

For a few years there, 1999-2002 he was a force of nature...When I first became a fan of the club, Rivaldo was a big reason

And as epic as that Valencia hat trick was, he had nearly as impressive moments at the San Siro & Bobby Brown that season...A left leg that instilled fear in opponents
